Bruce Gamble is an award-winning author and historian who served as a Naval Flight Officer during the closing years of the Cold War. Medically retired in 1989, he began working for the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation before turning to freelance writing. In the early days of the Pacific War after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, things looked mighty grim for the Americans and many of their allies, especially Australia. Faced with a seemingly unstoppable foe, America was reeling from multiple defeats and Australia was on high alert over the possibility of a Japanese invasion. Thrust into this highly volatile situation was a small band of American B-17 bombers and their crews in the hopes they could help turn back the Japanese and keep Australia safe. This is the story of those bombers and their crews.Beginning with some background on both the B-17 and the crew members who would take them into battle, the book follows them as they fly to Hawaii...right as the Japanese are attacking Pearl Harbor. The story of each bomber is given, along with plenty of personal recollections of what it was like to be there on the Day of Infamy. After spending some time in Hawaii, the planes have to fly a very long way to Australia, stopping at various points along the way, before finally arriving in a situation which left much to be desired: poor facilities, virtually no spare parts, an incredibly long supply line (which wasn't fully functional for quite some time), a plethora of insects and other pests, disease and the ever-present threat of the Japanese. With the help of the Australians, the bombers were able to carry out a variety of missions, many of which are described in great detail such as the rescue of General MacArthur from the Philippines, various bombing raids against the Japanese base at Rabaul, and the very daring Royce Mission.Author Bruce Gamble has written a fantastic book about these brave men who were facing extremely long odds, but still went out and carried the fight to the Japanese as best they could. It's a definite testament to the perseverance and fortitude of both the Americans and Australians as they found themselves thrust into a terrible situation, yet one in which they managed to have a meaningful impact on the outcome of the war. On December 7th, 1941, the Japanese attacked the American base at Pearl Harbor. During the attack, a flight of B-17 bombers arrived on the scene. Unarmed, these planes were forced to land while shaking off attacks from Japanese fighters. These men would go on to compose the "Kangaroo Squadron".Based in Australia, these heroic men would be among the first to strike back at the Japanese. After their ordeal of landing at Pearl Harbor, these men began the task of searching for the Japanese. Often flying in planes that were in constant need of repair, they attacked Japanese bases throughout the South Pacific, including the big Japanese base at Rabaul.When General Douglas MacArthur was ordered to leave the Philippines by President Roosevelt, it was the Kangaroo Squadron who sent planes to retrieve him, his staff, and family. These fliers helped hold the line in the Pacific until reinforcements arrived in the fall of 1942.Author Bruce Gamble has written an excellent book about one of the lesser-known squadrons of the war. Using first=hand accounts from both American and Japanese participants, Gamble brings the early days of the war in the Pacific to light. This book reads like a fine novel and is packed with accounts of the harrowing missions flown by the Kangaroo Squadron. Gamble is one of the leading experts on the war in the Pacific, and his Rabaul trilogy is one of the best accounts written on that particular campaign. Kangaroo Squadron rates on the same level. Thrust unarmed into combat with their arrival in Hawaii during the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor by Japanese warplanes, the men of what would soon become the 435th “Kangaroo Squadron” of the Fifth Air Force fought their way through the darkest days in the Pacific War. I was privileged to be born to 435th pilot John Wallace Fields. Because I began attending bombardment group reunions with my father at an early age, I became acquainted with many of the officers and enlisted men of the 435th Armed Reconnaissance Squadron of the 19th Bomb Group, from Gen. Eugene Eubanks, the commander of the 19th Group, to Fred Eaton, pilot of B-17 41-2446 (the Swamp Ghost); many of the Swamp Ghost crew; Frank Bostrom, who flew General McArthur out of the Philippines; to Earl Williams, the last survivor of the Kangaroo Squadron. From my close association with these men I learned many of the stories that are contained in Bruce Gamble’s wonderfully written and meticulously researched history of the Kangaroo Squadron. As well acquainted as I am with many of the stories, I confess that I felt the tension of the times as Bruce detailed them in his book with an unfiltered, fresh, and educated eye, making it all new again.As a result of my association with these largely unsung heroes of the early air war in the Pacific, I developed an abiding desire to see that the Swamp Ghost, which went down on their first mission out of Australia, be recovered from the swamp in which it force-landed in Papua New Guinea on February 23, 1942. I worked on this project for over a quarter of a century with many institutions and individuals, culminating in the rescue of the Swamp Ghost as a member of a team headed by my dear friend, Fred Hagen, in 2006. I have now had the satisfaction of seeing the Swamp Ghost safely installed at the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum on Oahu, where she now rests in a battle-scarred sea-plane hangar on Ford Island. In Kangaroo Squadron, Bruce Gamble has made it all come to life and immortalized a proud but little-known group of men who were the point of the spear for America, at a time and in a place when spears were hard to come by. As the proud son of a Kangaroo Squadron pilot, and a friend of many 435th members, I give Kangaroo Squadron five stars, on my behalf, and theirs.

I do not...do not understand the five star reviews. I pre-ordered this book because I really enjoyed Lapena's debut novel "The Couple Next Door" and actually have a hard time believing the same person wrote both books.This book is pedestrian beyond belief. Sentences like "Tom felt sad" or "Karen was nervous" read like an adult version of "Dick and Jane." There were sentences just that short and I don't believe that I have ever read adult fiction that was this juvenile sounding. After reading books like "Gone Girl," "The Girl on the Train," "Behind Closed Doors" and other thrillers that were not only compelling plot-wise but well-written, this book was just plain terrible.I don't care that none of the characters were likable (that's not a prerequisite for me) but they were so intrinsically uninteresting and boring that I had to finish the book by breezing through the short sentences to get to the end.If it's not clear by now that I hated this book, I'll say it right now. I hated this book.Lisa is annoyed.The End.

If I could put NO Stars I would. Very disappointing after the first one. I could not like even one of the characters. She used a tired and boring formula. Not everyone is having an affair with the neighbor. Having to repeat how much the couple loved each other in their soliloquies was the only evidence that it was a fact. Sorry Shari.

The characters had no depth, the book was predictable and I battled on to the end hoping that at some point it would improve. Unfortunately it didn't apart from a feeble attempt at a twist in the last couple of pages.

This book ignores complicated scenarios and ignores police forensics. It talks about how intelligent the police are, but apparently they have no interest in looking into the background of a murder suspect and do not know how to check a pair of gloves to see if they were used while firing a gun. Sloppy writing and just an insult to the intelligence of people who grew up watching police detective work on tv.

I felt the story was predictable and the writing a bit superficial. I enjoyed her book The Couple Next Door but A Stranger in the House was disappointing.

This is the 2nd novel I've read from this author & I cannot decide which took my breath away the fastest or the hardest. I finished this book in a day and a half. I'd have had it read quicker but I too have a life.You think you've got it figured out by chapter 3ish, only to find out you do NOT! This will have you page turn ing and gasping until the very end.It finishes up with a delicious turn of events. Enjoy it as I did and be sure to share it with friends. I can't wait to read more from Shari Lapena. This book has alot of similarities as her 1st one, but boy what a difference at the same time.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat and I never wanted to put it down! Lapena knows how to build a story up and loved the twisted love story intertwined with the mysterious murder. Her character development was good and even though you may feel it was a little predictable something would surprise you and you were wrong in your assumption making it even more intriguing. I loved every minute of this exhilarating messed up murder love mystery and can't wait for her next novel!

Repeating herself over and over. A waste of my time and money.

As someone who is weak in Physics, I used this book to study ahead before my Physics II course. The book is written in an entertaining style that is very clear. I highly recommend this for anyone taking Physics II or about to take Physics II.

Very good overall -- I used it to translate my Calculus based Physics text book into English. Uses basic algebra and trig to cover 2nd half of a 2 semester physics course, although the order and organization of the topics may vary from school to school.I didn't use the work books, so I can't gauge their quality nor the level of synergy between the book and the workbook.Gripes: references material in book one that... is ... not in book one.Would like a tear-out car for formulas like many of the other dummies books have.

This book was totally worth every penny spent. My professor was horrible this semester, and the textbook just made things even more confusing. This is a great way to have concepts literally dumbed down for you a bit, so that you can understand them. I wish I only bought this and not my actual textbook for the class! This helped me a lot, and without it, I don't know where my grade would be right now!

This is the second of two Dummies books on physics. It is practical and useful on explaining the basics but not so elementary that it looses importance. You might have better books explaining the maths, but the simple but well written text is not mired with loads of mathematical proofs, but does have a nice mix.

I love the "...For Dummies" line of support regardless of the difficult subject matter. As for physics, and the comprehension of this subject material, as many different means of tutorial support are always helpful in grasping the theory of the subject. This is a great book to support and enhance an introductory physics course.

In order to understand this book I had to first go through Khan Academy lectures. After completing the lectures I didn't really need to read this book. Therefore I advice anybody who wants to learn physics to go to Khan Academy. This book is not for dummies as advertised. I feel cheated.

In some areas it was helpful, in some aspects-esp. the really in-depth stuff-not so much. If you have a teacher who just likes to put equation up with no explanation-save your money and hire a tutor!

Good for test preparation. Recommended by university to cover what you'll need to apply and be competitive.

I bought this for a medical terminology course I was taking. I was afraid it would be too basic, but I learned a lot.This book is a cross between a traditional textbook and a workbook. Each chapter contains a short section (~5-10 pages) of text and figures on the topic being studied, followed by a break down of related roots and terminology and a short personal testimony from a patient, which shows the clinical relevance of the information being studied. The last half of each chapter contains a number of different activities fill-in-the-blank and matching style to practice the information covered.What's helpful?-Emphasis on learning roots - rather than requiring you to memorize each term, this book focuses on common roots found in medical words so you will be prepared to confront new words you come across-Plenty of practice activities - I found there were more practice exercises in each chapter than I needed to do well, so I skipped many of them, but it was good to know they were there for topics I was a less familiar with-Concise- gives a nice overview of all the information someone interested in medicine would need to know without being overwhelmingOverall, I would say this is a great text for an undergrad or anyone interested in medicine. It must cover a lot of ground in one book, so it cannot be expected to be extremely detailed. It is a good resource to have available.*If you buy the textbook new, it comes with an access code to the Evolve website. This is useful because it has pdf's containing the definitions of the terminology used in the textbook. This is convenient, but the definitions can be found online or in any medical dictionary if you don't have the access code.

I actually think this is a very good textbook. It is straight-forward and very easy to read. It goes over basic anatomy and some basic physiology but you can skip these portions if you did well in those classes. It also has describes some diagnostic tests and diseases which is nice to see how these terms can be applied. Sections are broken down into the systems of the body (i.e., cardiovascular system, blood system, immune system, etc) and you learn the medical terms that apply to each accordingly. I only wish this book was offered in hard cover.

I purchased this book new instead of used thinking it would come with an access code as it alludes to in the description. Unfortunately, the description points you to a QR code that links to a mobile app that may or may not be useful later in the semester but gave no access to my course online - I had to purchase access to that directly from the publisher for an additional $50.The content of the book looks great but some students such as myself would benefit from a clearer description regarding access to the online Evolve course which is not included with the purchase of a new book as the description and some reviews might lead you to believe. Instead, you get access to free mobile app and online "resources" which looks similar to the course I had to purchase access to but without the graded modules.

I really love the way this book is designed, offering definition lists, intermittent review sections and useful exercises. As stated, this particular listing does not include access code (though you can access free online flash cards, quizzes, etc.)I really wish it came with a cd of word pronunciations - I paid extra for this on the website and can't get the files to work properly.If you're wavering between the paperback and an electronic version, know that this book is SO heavy. At 900-something pages, just carrying it across the room drives me nuts, so I'm grateful the course I'm taking is online.Happily surprised by this book - tons of terminology, organized beautifully.

I bought this textbook for a 'medical terminology' pair of classes, and it's great. The material is clear and easy to understand. There are plenty of exercises to work on to test your knowledge and help you remember more. The site that goes with the book is somewhat limited in its usefulness, especially when compared to wileyplus or the like, but it's better than nothing.

This book is useless if you need the access code to do the homework online with mindtap. The title is not only misleading but down right fraudulent as it says it right in the title that you get 6 months access and was the reason I bought this particular one. I have reported this to amazon

I was a bit concerned at first because all the reviews regarding the access code that the description says it includes, stated that they either didn't even get an access code, or they got a used one. For my class, we need the access code. I just received my book today with the access code unused. To verify it was unused I logged into Cengage and was able to register the code. The book itself is in very good condition, looks brand new. Also pretty awesome that I was able to save $31.

The format of this "textbook" is unlike any I have ever used. It is absolutely readable and not your typical dry textbook. You can actually read this one because of the way it is formatted and the way the information is presented. I wish more texbooks were formatted like this. You will see once you crack into it. It was also pretty interesting and I have since decided to take more marketing classes as my free electives. This is also among the more affordable textbooks.

I took an online marketing class and this was the text book, I only used the book itself, not the online access since our professor didn't set that up. It would be nice if the online activities were available without a professor setting up a class. The book does a good job of presenting marketing topics though some of it is repetitive.

Concise presentation of marketing principals in plain English. The text made up for an ignorant, semi-literate instructor. I cannot endorse this book strongly enough.

This was purchased because I needed it for school purposes, but I mean it was cheaper than buying it from the school's bookstore.

This is an update of one my students use for a class. I liked the updates, so the class is switching to this one.

This was the book I needed at a competitive price. Item received as described and shipped fast. The book itself (content) is not the best but it gives a decent overview of the topics and is not too difficult to read.
