"It's never about where we are at now, it's about the ferocity with which we focus out attention on improving those areas. It's the courage that we show when experimenting with new ways of living life, because doing so leaves us vulnerable." This book is FULL of so many great points. I felt like I was working with the "coach" through my own issues, soaking in his advice and digging deep into the experiments I can put in place. Not only does it boost confidence to realize the small steps are so do-able, but it's a great reminder of the feelings that come with being human, and the ferocity it takes to make a change. Stress is manageable. Life should be lived by design. So change the things you can control- YOU, and the rest of it will take care of itself. I appreciated the repetitive reminders that stress comes from trying to change the things we'll never be able to. All we can change are our habits, and the way we talk to ourselves. I'd recommend this book for anyone stuck in their ways. If we view "commitments" as "experiments", it's no longer a huge mountain. It's just a temporary decision which could have a positive impact for good!

For those of us within the motivational industry or for those of us who read self-help or motivational books regularly, it can often be difficult to find something new that is added to the conversation. Thankfully, R. Michael Anderson avoids this problem with The Experiment. Without giving away too much of the main idea, I'll simply say that this short book is worth the time. There's really only one main idea, but it's practical, uncomplicated, and it works. And it works because even if it doesn't, you can keep trying until it does. That's all I'll say. Read the book.In regard to the writing style, it also works. Couching the main idea in a fictional but realistic setting keeps the reader interested and wondering what will happen next to Dennis, the beleaguered CEO of a successful but struggling business.Mr. Anderson's work is original and interesting and a good investment of time. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to make changes in their lives.

AMAZING read!! I have been struggling through so much emotional and physical stress in my life and have purchased several books on self help and how to manage stress. Like SO many others, I am juggling work, raising children, caring for sick and aging family members while trying to keep my head on straight and not end up in the hospital myself. I have ZERO time to sit and read these days, but this book literally took me less than 2 hours to get through and I am blown away!!! Thank you R. Michael Anderson for teaching me in the most simple terms how to make the changes I so desperately need. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

I have a hard time getting through most self-help books but I found this one fascinating. Perhaps because the steps toward improvement are written as a series of experiments, I found it easier to read. The author shows how a coach, by gradually introducing each experiment to an over-worked businessman, helps him get his life under control and improve both his professional and personal relationships. It is so clearly explained that anyone could benefit from its message.I recommend it highly.

The breezy, entertaining style of The Experiment belies its rather profound potential: to help us change our lives through the application of the principles that play out in the main character's life in the book. I am ambivalent about this book. The parts about Mei Lien and her family 100 years ago are gripping and very well written. The modern-day events often made me think I was reading something slightly above a harlequin novel. The characters felt flat and the modern-day plot would have been at home in a romance novel (minus the bodice-ripping.) Inara's agonizing that she cannot tell Daniel and his family about her ancestor's actions seemed especially contrived. This could have been a great novel if Estes had just stuck with the long-ago story. Such great characters to build on! How about telling us the life story of the child instead of the Inara story - that could have been riveting! A great editor could have coaxed a great novel out of this, because the raw material and skill is clearly there. Instead, we got great history and - forgive me - sappy presence. I really would like to give 3.5 stars, but that is not possible, so I'm going with three - because in my book, it does not rise to the level of 4 stars because of the modern-day part.I appreciate Estes shining a bright light on the way the Chinese were treated in the late 19th century.

The storyline is good enough. I wish the story itself weren't so depressing, but not all stories can have happy endings, and I accept that.The thing that really kept this from being a good book, in my opinion, was the lack of character development. I had no sense of Inara's or Daniel's personalities, or even what they looked like. Inara's dad was a jerk, but that was never addressed, and Inara didn't even seem to realize it. I found their romance to be ridiculously fast-paced and disappointingly bland. Not really knowing the characters, I was unable to get emotinally attached to them, which just made the dating part so boring.The modern-day ortion of the book was boring and trite...the historical part was interesting at first, but then became so tragic, I was tempted to just stop reading. The lack of character development actually helped in that area, as I was able to separate myself from the worst, saddest part.The storyline is interesting, though. With better story-telling, this could be a great book.

I can't even begin to say how much I loved this book. It brought out emotions in me that I never would have expected. This is the story of a young Chinese-American woman whose family is forced to leave the United States. All the Chinese in Seattle, US citizens or not, are rounded up one morning and made to buy passage on a ship that's said to be heading to China. (Sounds similar to current events in the United States.) It isn't. Overhearing a conversation between the ship's owner and it's captain, the girl rushes to tell her father the fate that awaits them, and it's not a good one. He takes action and makes her jump into the water in the hope that at least she will survive and make it back to land. She's seen "falling overboard" and rescued by a kind and caring man who takes her back to his farm and nurses her back to health. In time, they marry and lead a fairly happy life, having a child. Water, however, is always a malevolent character in this story.The take of Mei Lein is juxtaposed with that of Inara Erickson. Inara has just received finished school with a degree in International Business and has recently inherited the family's estate on Orca Island off the coast of Seattle. While her father insists she take a job with Starbucks, Inara has other ideas, wanting to develop the estate into a luxury, specialty hotel. While on the island, she discovers a loosened stair tread. Curious, she moves it away and discovers a small package wrapped in fabric. She opens the package and discovers a silk sleeve with remarkable embroiders. She researches this unusual finding online and discovers a professor at a nearby university who specializes in such things. She seeks him out and, as easily as that, the story blooms into a full and fulfilling book.This book did what few can, it made me cry, deep, bone-shaking sobs, and made me miss my parents more that I can say.If you want to read an excellent novel, filled with true emotion and history that may well be repeating itself, this is the one.

Interesting but disturbing info about the mistreatment of Chinese in early Seattle, however, the story in the novel was only fair. The writing was uninspiring and the ending predictable. I finished the book because it was for my book club but I skimmed over entire paragraphs to get to the ending.The author based her story on her findings of the murder of several Chinese during the forcible removal of Chinese from the west coast. She extrapolated this into the murder of an entire boat-load.of Chinese. I thought that might be a stretch. However, the treatment of the Chinese girl, Mei Lein, who was left behind rang tragically true and I am reminded that our history includes some deplorable events.I don't regret reading the book but would hardly call it "brilliant" as the did the Amazon review.

On one hand this book was a page turner and a quick and easy read. On the other hand it was predictable and often far fetched. I found it unbelievable that a whole life could be depicted in embroidery, even with face recognition, etc. Mei Lin's struggle with her illness toward the end also was not believable. In the present time, I also had trouble with the whole renovation project, how quickly it came about without detailed planning, etc. There were also too many far fetched coincidences. Overall, it's a good, entertaining book to read.

I read alot I started this book and I couldn't put it down. I spent my whole life here in Seattle area I grew up on Beacon Hill my father worked in resurants in and around Pioneer square. My family has ties to Chinatown it was an amazing story. The characters jumped off the pages like you were in story. This is the kind of story you wait until a great storm is coming then you snuggle down in your recliner with a throw and hot cup of tea and read until you finish you wont be able to put it down.

My daughter said to me this morning, "Mom, this is the best book I've ever read." So I tried it myself, and it was amazing. This book is about a boy that had a dad that played for the Tigers and was a pitcher, but his dad then retired, but his love for baseball didn't end. Every second he spent with his son, he though about baseball, and how he couldn't play anymore. So one day, the dad divorces the mom with a note, and leaves for Japan, where he is a baseball coach. Now, the boy found a job where he is batboy for the Detroit Tigers, and the book takes off from there. You should seriously consider reading this book. I can almost guarantee that you will love this book.

This is an amazing book about a 14 year old boy named Ryan who lives with a single mother. Ryan's favorite sport is baseball, he loves to play it and he loves to watch it. He got this passion from his dad, a star major league pitcher. But his dad abandoned their family, which was stupid because Ryan is a great kid. Ryan applied for a batboy job with his favorite team, the Tigers. In his mind this is the perfect summer job, and it sounds pretty awesome to me too. But it got even better for Ryan. The Tigers just hired his all time favorite player, Hank Bishop. But while trying to do acts of kindness for Hank, Ryan gets a look at how mean Hank can really be. All this is going on while Ryan is in the worst hitting slump of his life for his own select team. Finally with everything else happening, Ryan's idiot dad shows up and all he seems to do is make Ryan feel worse. But right when Ryan's world is about to collapse, things get better. It starts with Hank and Ryan's Mom developing a relationship, and then Hank starts being nicer to Ryan and helps him out of his slump. Can Hank hit his 500th homerun before it's too late? Can Ryan help his select team win the state championship? Read The Batboy to find out. This is probably one of my favorite books, and I really love how independent Ryan is and how they build Hank's character throughout the story.

Bf asked for this for his birthday. He didn’t read it until two months after the following birthday. But it was so good he immediately asked for the other books in the series. So good read I guess.

I love this book. We use it to teach 7th grade English. Now days we have lots of kids from divorced families. This is a good book with this topic and includes a sports theme as well

Mike Lupica's book Batboy focuses on baseball and family. Both Brian and his mom are working through Brian's father's abrupt departure for Japanese baseball and a divorce. Brian snags a dream job as the Detroit Tiger's batboy for the summer, and also is playing his regular school league team - more than enough to take his mind off these events. Then Brian's idol, Hank Bishop, gets re-signed to the Tigers team, slightly shy of his 500th home run. He is in career repair mode from a steroids use charge and a hinted at divorce. Both, though they do not realize it, have entered recovery.Both Brian and Hank can't seem to get to first base communicating at work. Both have serious mid-summer slumps to contend with. Hank, in fact is nearing dismissal from the team.Figuring his batting slump is due to not being able to practice for his league play, Brian and his fellow batboy Finn stay after a game, and hit ball after ball in the batting cage to find out what his swing needs. Out of the dark, Hank Bishop shows up, unasked for, but with freely given advice and suggestions that by the end of practice look to be connecting Brian's swing with the ball. Out in the parking lot, Hank meets Brian's Mom and gets invited to dinner. Brian notices for the first time in a long time, his Mom is interested in baseball or is it in Hank?In a nice move to fix Hank's slump, Lupica makes great use of all the DVDs and sports footage ever stared at by any baseball fan or player anywhere. Brian, in the midst of viewing Hank's old games spots a critical change in Hank's batting stance. Hank brushes off Brian's efforts to communicate, until Brian finally blurts out what he saw. Hank, man enough to recognize a fan can spot something useful, views the footage after dinner and stays to look at more games and more games and more games with his biggest fan.The rush toward the end of the season is given in fine detail and includes a visit from Brian's Dad. When his Dad focuses on baseball business matters and ignores being with his son, Brian comes to understand the difference between his Dad and Hank - one truly is focused only on the game. Hank, Brian's new friend and his Mom's new date, relates to both the game and the people who play it and knows why both are important.
