Paul Schwartz is a sportswriter for the New York Post, where he has covered the New York Giants since 1994. He is an honors graduate of the University at Albany. As a lifelong Giants fan, someone could write "I love the Giants" over and over again on a page, chalkboard-punishment-style, and I'd probably eat it up, but this book really does bring to light many great stories, especially to younger fans, (somewhat) like myself, who only know of Frank Gifford, Y.A. Tittle, and Sam Huff from the grainy footage in NFL Films productions (miss ya Steve).In my view, to truly love a team is to understand its current players in the context of past teams great and not-so-great (see the chapters on the '70s for the latter), and this book allows fans of all ages to gain that historical perspective, with amusing anecdotes that really convey the personalities of the players, coaches, and owners. Definitely recommend to any who "bleed blue." Go G-men!

Tales from the New York Giants Sideline provides the professional football and Giants fan very little. It is poorly organized, provides absolutely no insight into the team, its history, and its championship seasons. Even more disappointing, given that the book is based on interviews with many past and present players and coaches, it gives little insight into the personalities that have given this franchise a unique and deep history. In short, it is a total failure.The book is divided into six chapters: Training Camp, The Season, The Founder, The Coaches, The Teammates, and The Championships. None of the chapters provide great insight on the given topic. Further, the organization of the book provides no chronological continuity as it jumps all over the place in time and era. Essentially what this book consists of are very short vignettes, in fact vignettes isn't even the right word, short snippets, that give a little nugget of information about the team and players. It's basically a little collection of quotes and comments about the chapter topics.The players, coaches, and owners that get the most air time, so to speak, are Wellington Mara, Sam Huff, Y.A. Tittle, Frank Gifford, Phil Simms, and Bill Parcels. Of course other players and events are touched upon, but not in any meaningful way. Yes, Lawrence Taylor is in here, but mostly only in embarrassing situations.Very unfortunately is that there is a little bit, but not nearly enough, about some of the most important events in Giants history. Want to know a little bit about one of the seminal games in NFL History, the 1958 NFL Championship between the Giants and Baltimore Colts (the first overtime game in NFL history)? You won't get much here. Want to know about the Giants' Super Bowl years? You won't get a lot here except a few quotes and comments. In short, you don't get much at all with this book.Thus, I would not recommend this book to a football fan or Giants fan. There is just not enough information or good storytelling here to make this book worthwhile. It is a quick and easy read, but even casual Giants' fans are not likely to learn anything particularly new or worthwhile.The author of this book has covered the New York Giants for the New York Post since 1994. The Giants have had mostly mediocre results during this time frame, this book is less than mediocre.

While it is interesting to know about the history of the team, and the stories of old coaches and players, I thought it lacked more info regarding the players of this generation.

I thought this book was good for what it was. Is it a historical retrospective of the NY Giants? NO. You're not going to get that for $15, and shouldn't expect it. This is simply short, anectodal stories of various Giant personnel over the years. Each one is only a page or two in length, so it's a book you can pick up and put down, and not have to worry about remembering where you were. I'd recommend it for any Giants fan.

I'm not a Young Adult but got this because it was an Edgar Winner. I'm no longer using that as a serious criteria. Not a bad little book but I suspected the murderer early on and wasn't sympathetic to the young protagonist who did not seem worthy of becoming a Samurai. The feudal setting in Japan was of interest and it's a quick read. I gave it to my young teen great-nephew of the video game generation and I'm eager to learn if he actually reads it and, if so, his thoughts.

My 7th grade students used this book to supplement our reading of the first novel in the series, The Ghost in the Tokaido Inn. The Hooblers did a great job creating characters that help readers understand the world of medieval Japan. We even contacted the Hooblers to ask some questions about the books, and they graciously responded.

The third in the series takes a different path from the first two books to show a different path to true honor. In this story, the main character is a samurai in training, but learns that the way of the ninja has its own set of honor. This leads to him understanding that honor is based on the man and not what his title or class is.

Just like the other books in the series In Darkness, Death is a must read! I use the Hoobler's Samurai Series in my 7th grade classroom to teach ancient Japanese culture. The books are highly entertaining while being also highly educational. I recommend them for public, private, and home-schools.

This is the book that got me interested in historic Japanese culture as a backdrop for detective novels. Really good read. This book arrived as described and it was well worth the purchase price.

I don't know, I just like these books. Seikei is smart but is humble and learns from his mistakes. I like the Judge Ooka character as well.

My grandson liked how the story was told, the ninja characters and Seikei, the main character. It helped him understand and enjoy Asian culture.

Synopsis:Samurai Lord Inaba is murdered in his sleep while under the protection of the Shogun. Judge Ooka and his adoptive son, Seikei, attempt to investigate with a bloodstained origami butterfly as their sole clue. Judge Ooka enlists the aid of a "retired" ninja, Tatsuno, to accompany Seikei as he travels across Japan searching for the maker of the origami butterfly.Their travels lead Seikei and Tatsuno to meet impoverished farmers, wary monks, and powerful daimyos. While Tatsuno attempts to warn Seikei to rein in his idealistic fervor, Seikei's code of honor win Tatsuno's respect. In the end, Seikei must flee from false imprisonment and face a dangerous and powerful ninja to find the truth behind the assassination.Review:In Darkness, Death introduces another interesting character in the series. Tatsuno, the "retired" ninja is cynical and resists having to accompany the young Seikei. Though Tatsuno could have abandoned Seikei numerous times, we find that Tatsuno follows a strict code of honor of his own. I enjoyed learning about Tatsuno and the lives of ninjas during the 1700s, their relationship to the monks and to the local farmers.This adventure shared the wonderful balance of action and insight into Seikei's personality. His slow realization of the plight of the farmers, the power of the daiymo and the role of the Shogun and his officials was sad but very interesting. The dilemmas that he faced added further depth to fourteen year old Seikei's character.

I feel that I might be a bit biased considering I am a big fan of Ethan's art work. I actually own a few prints by him and hope to continue to grow my collection. This being said, I have had his book on pre-order since the day it was available and I was super excited when the ARC arrived on my door step.The ARC is in black and white, which doesn’t let me see the novel in its full and magical glory - even though I've seen it on tumblr and his Patreon.What's nice about this middle grade graphic novel is that it teaches the importance of families. The ones we are raised in and the ones we chose. Through the story, Edmund and the Childe bring up what it means to be part of a family, and who really belongs to the human family. The Childe, who never really had that experience or relationship, learns that it means more than being born to someone - and honestly it is beautiful.The most majestic and unique part of this novel is that it’s 95% done with traditional water color illustrations. In a world where everything is digitized and on photoshop this little book is odd but perfect. Aldridge's art reminds me a lot of E. H. Shepard's Winnie the Pooh art style with the thick ink strokes and beautiful colors.It's truly modernized nostalgia filled with magic.I really don't want to spoil too much of the story, because it's wonderful and I want the whole world to read it. What you really need to know is that it is a fantasy story filled with changelings, golems, witches, sibling love, trolls, evil aunts, rats, fights and a DRAGON.I look forward to reading it again in its full color glory. I also look forward to the second book - since there are so many loose ends that need solving!

The beautiful cover artwork drew my eye to this graphic novel. I actually got it for my 11 year old son for Christmas since he loves fantasy graphic novels. We both thought it was okay but not great.The story is a pretty basic one about two boys (one faerie and one human) who are swapped at birth. As events unfold the human child is forced to seek out his human family displacing the faerie brother who has been living with them all these years.While there are good themes about the meaning of family and friendship, the story is pretty basic.The illustration was easy enough to follow but wasn’t my favorite style. It has a very “sketched” look to it and the colors are washed out. The effect was very unfinished looking artwork that seemed a bit weak to me.Overall this was a decent fantasy graphic novel. The story is pretty basic and the artwork was good but not great. Both me and my son thought this was good and interesting but didn’t love it.

I loved reading Estranged! I thought the plot line was original and engaging. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful and I've enjoyed pouring over the details. I feel like the story is very relatable and beautiful. The theme of family and friendship was touching. It was fun to go on a little adventure.

Excellent imagery and great storyline. Kudos to Ethan for a great piece of art.

My 8yo got totally swept into this book. He used to balk at my insistence that reading is fun, but this has him asking me what other graphic novels there are out there.
