The Slave Master of Trinidad: William Hardin Burnley and the Nineteenth-Century Atlantic World

Review

"The Slave Master of Trinidad is an unbelievably bold book that retells the story of slavery, emancipation, and indentured labor through an account of Burnley's life and work."―Nicholas Draper, author of The Price of Emancipation: Slave-Ownership, Compensation, and British Society at the End of Slavery"In this fascinating biography of William Hardin Burnley, Selwyn R. Cudjoe presents a figure who was a leading opponent of the abolishment of slavery in Trinidad. This beautifully written and meticulously researched account of Burnley's life unfolds the story of a planter who was born in America, educated in England, and made his fortune in the Caribbean. Measured in tone, this book not only exposes Burnley's public and private racism, but also places his life in context of the greater historical currents of the first half of the 19th century Atlantic world. Cudjoe has written a volume essential to a full understanding of the history of Trinidad."―Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Alphonse Fletcher University Professor, Harvard University"Selwyn Cudjoe's resurrection of William Hardin Burnley is both an invaluable piece of Caribbean and British cultural history and also a work buoyed by perhaps its moving central irony―that the former English slave master Burnley lives again, rescued from oblivion, only because of the intellectual diligence and the generosity of a direct descendant of the very community of people in Trinidad that Burnley lorded over and saw mainly as brainless property. Professor Cudjoe gives us here another judicious, disciplined lesson in the importance of scrutinizing our past, warts and all."―Arnold Rampersad, author of Ralph Ellison: A Biography"In this well-researched and highly readable narrative there is a puzzle. Despite all his wealth and power William Hardin Burnley was consistently on the losing side in all the great controversies of the time, whether it was flogging female slaves, imposing 'apprenticeship,' educating the black population, freeing the slaves, enfranchising the freedmen, or a dozen other causes which were won because the former slaves themselves would not accept half-measures. Selwyn Cudjoe's engrossing study is a classic."―Robin Blackburn, author of The American Crucible: Slavery, Emancipation and Human Rights"The dynamic ending of the transatlantic trade system and the processes of slave emancipation in the British West Indies are brought into sharper focus in Selwyn R. Cudjoe's The Slave Master of Trinidad. These events and their impact on the colony of Trinidad are clearly captured in Cudjoe's meticulous biography of William Hardin Burnley, a very powerful figure of this era."―William Julius Wilson, author of More than Just Race: Being Black and Poor in the Inner City"An original work that will appeal to academics, university students, and general readers studying Trinidad and Caribbean history in the late slavery and emancipation periods."―Bridget Brereton, author of A History of Modern Trinidad, 1783–1962"The Slave Master of Trinidad is a beautifully crafted book about an influential character in our country's history . . . While this book is about Burnley, each chapter allows us to see a moving perspective of different aspects of Trinidadian society over the decades of slavery and beyond. Burnley wrote prolifically and was the subject of much correspondence. We have benefited from these details as a result of Prof. Cudjoe's meticulous research."―The Trinidad Express

I live in Trinidad. This provided a different perspective to the slave trade, Trinidad's history and life during the 1800's.Great book - must read. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I thought that it was a bit repetitive.

A complete guide to what is needed for a rifle to be used when hunting game that can be lethal. The author has experience in his subject and also draws on the experience of others in showing, in depth, exactly what makes a dangerous game rifle. The book covers suitable action types and strengths and weaknesses are noted for various "improvements" and embellishments. Sights that can stand up to the recoil of major calibers are also included. Suitable calibers are well covered with both historic information and current loadings. Projectiles are discussed in depth with a critical look at most current manufacturers offerings. The last part of the book is used to teach the dangerous game rifle owner how to become proficient in its use.

Very good book, blk and wht pics but does have all the cartridges shown.all of the big game cartridges are here from the old black power days thru most of the last centry. The author is knowledgeable and experianced at shooting most anything that would make a big bang. However all of the newest short fat mags from Rem. and Win. are missing due to the fact the author is very much married to the older and terribly British developments and their rifles. That really doesnt diminish this well writen book, could easily be supplemented with ballistic tables from many sources for the newer cartridges.

I know I'll never go to Africa to hunt the Big Five and I very much doubt I'll ever manage a trip to Alaska to hunt brown bear but as a firearms enthusiast I found Wieland's book fascinating. He is a talented writer and he really knows his rifles. Anyone interested in double or bolt action rifles could do much worse than this book. I especially like that he doesn't pull any punches. If a product or design is just so-so or of inferior quality he says so and says why. That is a refreshing change from the many articles one might read in the various gun magazines whose authors have apparently never seen a gun they didn't like.

This book has a great description of the big bores guns, many so far unknown to me.The cover now features a beautiful photo of a current rifle and a double barrel of 1909, it seems that just came out from the factory. The book is richly illustrated with photos of rilfes and their finishes. and some characters who made history with them.It is a pity that not all photos are color to be noticed every detail and engraving that each has, but surely this book is a delightful way to search for those who enjoy dangerous game rifles like me.

A detailed and well researched scholarly work, and a must read for aspiring dangerous game hunters. Many would fault the author's penchant for the rare and expensive guns and components discussed, arguing that for most of us these beautiful tools are out of reach. On the other hand, the subject is about fine rifles designed for dangerous game, and the author does a great job explaining his perspective and making strong arguments in favor of these perfect rifles that are also in many cases 'works of art'. Every subject generates a plethora of opinions, and many may not agree with the author - I happen to concur with his views and therefore found this work to be the epitome of usable and facinating information relating to this subject. Can we all afford a fine English double? No, but neither can most of us afford an Aston Martin and we can still drool and dream over it. A great book. Only minor criticism is that some points are repeated.

Another great book about dangerous game rifles and cartridges. Has more in depth information than "Great African Calibers," by Tony Sanchez. Very injoyable read.

Terri Wieland has outdone himself with this update to Dangerous Game Rifles. This is one of the best books ever written on the subject. This new updated version of Dangerous Game Rifles has improved the book considerably. The modern updated information is a welcome addition and is very helpful.I recommend this book to all big bore fans, dangerous game rifle aficionados, and to safari hunters. For further reading on dangerous game rifles and safari rifles I also recommend Safari Rifles 2 by Craig Boddington Safari Rifles 2 - Trade Edtion as well as (if you can forgive my slight bias) my own book, rexGun by Stephen Templar Rexgun.Good reading, good shooting and good hunting.

This is a great book on the history of big game rifles and shooting. It is packed full of useful current advise on the subject an extremely well written book.

Great great great! I need to get more for future years. Price is a bit high for what it is. Has lots of activities for kids but price should only be around $3 since each page can only be used once.

Some of the games are not very clear.

What Jewish kid doesn't love Sammy the Spider. I bought the whole collection for my son. He loves them so much.

Photocopy any pages that you don't want to cut out of the book. For example, there's an empty seder plate with the correct components (egg, shankbone, etc.) arranged in circles around it. The instructions say to copy them onto the plate, but your family may want to cut and paste -- and then display the finished product. The activities include colouring, finding hidden items, finding items that don't belong, connecting the dots, unscrambling words, plus a maze and a word search. There are also invitations; a board game; and instructions for a Sammy pin and a spider-web matzah treat.

This is a book of longing: longing for uniqueness, for love, for escape, for solitude, for identity in a faceless world. As is the case with much of Mishima's work, the longing takes place in a deep introspective psychological novel. This time, the protagonist is a malleable teenager, and his mirror is a once-malleable sailor he thinks is a hero. The child is precocious in ways that adults cannot understand, and his "genius" involves violence and subservience to a cult of young outcasts. Mishima himself was an outcast, his sensibility full of rage. This is a deeply disturbing novel, not for the faint of heart. Beautiful translation, except for the jacket copy, which doesn't allow for the extremism of Mishima's thoughts and actions.

The genius of Sailor is how it examines complex issues - Japan's postwar identity, western materialism versus traditional Japanese values, the ways in which nihilism overwhelms meaning - in such a concise, straightforward story. Ryuji is a simple sailor who went to sea to achieve some vaguely defined higher glory. Although Ryuji believes he's destined for great things, so far the fates haven't aligned to reveal what that great thing is. While on shore leave in Yokohama he meets Fusako, a widow who owns a high end clothing store that offers imported English articles. They become lovers, and, before long, fall in love.Fusako's thirteen year old son Noburu runs with a gang of strange and frightening youths who reject all attempts to impose meaning on them from the outside, whether it's from school, parents, society or literature. Noburu is torn between loyalty to the beliefs of his gang and his admiration for the heroic life he believes Ryuji exemplifies. But Ryuji's growing love for Fusako leads him to abandon the sea to become a clerk in Fusako's shop. Noburu's gang pounces on this as evidence that Ryuji has betrayed Noburu and them, and that he must be punished for abandoning the heroic course. This they proceed to do, in a way that feels both horrifying and inevitable.Written five years before his death at 45, this novel encapsulates Mishima's major intellectual and emotional preoccupations, but doesn't resolve them. Ryuji is punished for abandoning his dreams of glory, but it's not clear he would have achieved them. Fusako symbolizes collaboration with the western devil taking over Japan, but she is accomplished and financially successful. The most disturbing character is young Noburu. At an age when most humans are acquiring the mental sextants they need to navigate through the world, he is ensnared by a group who see life as having meaning only in the extremes of glory or death. The growing distance between his everyday life and his dark fantasies opens up during the course of the novel in profound and unsettling ways. What happens to Noburu, who has his whole life in front of him, is in many ways sadder than what happens to Ryuji.Noburu's dark dialectic is also a glimpse into the mental torments that affected Mishima. The most un-Japanese of its major writers in terms of his interests and lifestyle, he was nevertheless the most jingoistic Japanese patriot. A man of massive discipline and ambition, he was bedeviled by the fear that beneath the surface of his successful, glittering life lay a vast emptiness devoid of meaning. He spent his enormous intellectual and physical resources on turning himself into a symbol, but doubts about the meaning of that symbol led him to constantly revise it. Out of these internal contradictions he generated a furious literary output, a high profile life and a very public, if puzzling death meant to protest Japan's turn away from its traditional values. His internal struggles were both sad and heroic; his legacy is the great novels he left us, including this one.

I bought this after seeing it on David Bowie's top 100 list. I will warn that there are several disturbing moments, but I still found it to be a quick and interesting read unlike any other book I've read.

Yukio Mishima was a true master of confronting themes, written with great style. His descriptions of place are wonderful, plucking out one small pine bathed in sunlight in the midst of the desolation of an industrial landscape. You soon sense the underlying tension of this book - steadily emerging from the beauty, you know that this is going to end badly, with an unavoidable horror that is coming ... Gripping stuff. Thankfully no splatter-fest - but the cold, sociopathic "chief" and his nihilistic accolytes are truly frightening. The inevitability of what will be done is left to haunt you.Sure, you can read it at a number of levels - a contemporary view of a post-war Japan, a treatise on charismatic but psychopathic leadership, whatever. Or maybe just take it as a beautifully written tale of suspense and horror. Either way, it is great literature. Not one for the faint hearted - the cold, hard suspense is difficult to bear.

The book itself is short, but sweet. Well, sweet in a sickening sort of way.I love the characters, I love the way Mishima-san wrote descriptions, a lot of books fail to actually pull me into the moment. For better or worse, at certain parts of the story; I feel like I'm right there experiencing it as well. Either as a curious observer or unwilling participant. It's a great book that I think every man should read.

The ending was heavily foreshadowed throughout the book, so in that sense it was predictable. The way it all played out was a bit surprising, though not really. Mostly the book is just dark, and disturbing on a few levels.

LOVED IT

The book was great and everything but the binding fell apart for me, so just be careful with it and you'll be okay.

Maddie & Ben grew up together. He was her brother’s best friend & Maddie’s first crush, one she never grew out of. Just when Maddie is deciding to give up on Ben & try to start a relationship with someone, Ben’s situation changes. Talk about a man out of his depth. Ben is suddenly his niece Felicia’s guardian. Her mother died & his brother, Felicia’s father, is in prison. Maddie steps up to help him & it causes him to see her in a new light. Add in drama regarding the community garden & the people opposed to it. Can Ben & Maddie navigate everything safely?I loved the fact that this was not an “instant” love. Ben & Maddie had known each other for years. I enjoyed the interactions among the characters since it only adds additional understanding. The characters are the same as from Book 2 since they are a group of friends. This can easily be read as a stand alone though. You just gain character depth if you read it in order. This was a sweet romance!

I could hardly tear myself away from the book, but that's totally normal when it comes to Heather Tullis's books because I love them all so much! This book follows "Hello Again" (Book 1 of In the Garden) and it's not necessary to read the books in order if you happened upon this one first. The first one does give background on getting the location for the garden secured and the fun and problems that entailed, but if you missed it you can totally enjoy Maddie's story. But of course, you should go back and read "Hello Again" because it is fantastic.I'm also a teacher so I could really feel Maddie's love for the garden and her students and the heart that she put into the project hoping that it would be a success. The push-back from the gang had me captivated and I knew in my heart that the good would overtake evil (that's what we all hope for) but the tension kept me on my toes.Ben is a little clueless at first when it comes to Maddie and accepting help to care for his niece Felicia. The eight-year old moves in with him at the beginning after her mother dies and Ben becomes her guardian and he has to shuffle his bachelor life around to become her full time guardian as well as deal with some unexpected challenges that pop up out of the blue.Ben and Maddie have been friends for years, well been in each other's lives for years because Ben is best friends with Maddie's brother Jason. I enjoyed their relationship and seeing them fall in love with each other.I love series because I can get more involved with characters and you feel my addiction :o)I'm already totally looking forward to seeing Jason & Adelyn and Comfry and ????

The second book in the series. Just as good as the first one. Maddie teaches 3rd grade, and the of is across the street from the community garden. They have a greenhouse now and the 3 3rd grade classes are planting vegetables in it as part of their curriculum. Some gang members want the land back and have threatened people so few have signed for for plots. Maddie's brother 's best frie nd is a cop, and he helps at the garden to discourage the gangs. He also just got custody of his 7 year old niece since her father is in prison and her mother o'd. Maddie, who has had a crush on him for years, helps with her when his shifts change around. Finally, he noticed her and now there are 2 weddings to plan. Very good book.

Maddie and Ben have known each other for years. Maddie's family has been a better family to him then his own. Maddie has had a crush but did nothing while growing up. Ben is a police officer and Maddie is a teacher. His world gets turned upside down when his young niece ends up with him. He learns the joy of raising a young girl. Maddie helps him. It is a fun, crazy story with his trying to learn. Love the characters in the book and the wonderful garden. They are so sweet together.

As just a read. It was ok. But as a love story it was terrible. They date for one month and she is ready for marriage? They have kissed 3 times. And his niece calls her miss. McCormick the whole book???????? And who wants the description of a house of her friend in detail??? Now the next book is about her wacko friend. Nope

I loved this book. I loved Ben he was so great to Felicia and so patient with her as he took her into his home. Ben had such good instincts on caring from her from the get go.Maddie is a fun girl who's been pinning for Ben for way too long. When Felicia joins her class she is so sweet to her and Ben. I loved learning more about the green house project. She has some spunk for sure I loved when she finally told Bed don't you ever wonder... great writing!I loved this story overall. I was so impatient for things to be wrapped up in the end. Love this series.

A great sweet story to curl up with - Maddie and Ben are such lovely characters - you really love going on this journey with them.Little Felicia is adorable and I love how Ben really steps up and takes seriously his role of father and protector,Really great hills and valleys in their journey - but a wonderful resolution.I love Heather Tullis and am a great fan of the Di Carlo series - so I am loving this new "neighbourhood".

The beginning was a little bit slow. I liked all of the characters from basically the beginning, but the romance was a little bit slow in coming. I was satisfied though throughout the book for the most part, but when the romance came it , CAME! I rarely cry during books but this one almost brought me to tears. It was clean but passionate, the best kind of romance. I commend you Mrs. Tullis. Totally worth the money

Fabulos! Better as expected.

The designs featured in this book are medieval and old-world Folk-Art designs. The patterns are easy to read, and although the charts are in black and white, due to the graphic nature of the patterns they are easy to read and follow. The book starts out with a variety of pictures of samplers, followed by 4 pages of small sampler motives, so the reader can design his or her own sampler. Towards the end of the book a medieval tapestry pattern is offered with the same concept for DIY design. The patterns also include an Icelandic star and a blue and white tapestry, inspired by a horse cover for a lady's side saddle. Overall the book holds what it promises, but would be better if it would include better photography of finished needlework projects, instead of just showing tiles of the work. It is a good book for a very specific audience and taste, and certainly worth a look.

The book is beautiful and I hope it will bey very useful as well. I am looking forward using it and will start with sewing the Icelandic star in blue. The item I got is used and signed by the author and it should be an good inspiration also because it is signed the 11th jun 1999 on my grandmothers birthday. I wonder where this book will take me, it is filled with unexpected adventures.

Nice patterns in the book, a few I want to do now. Been on my wishlist for a long time, glad I finally purchased it.

Excellent book on old Icelandic tapestry design, in needlepoint. Jona Sparey gives good instructions and her colour-selections is wonderful. I look forward to make some of my own, starting with one of the small ones.

Very good condition

Book is excellent. Range of traditional patterns that are very hard to access. Book is second hand but in excellent condition.

Babykins is trying to decide which beautiful pattern will be the first. So many choices, and so much variety! Good stuff!

Miami, by Joan Didion

From Library Journal

Though Didion dissects Floridas hot spot, the objective here, however, is not so much of a profile of the city as a political analysis of the Miami Cuban mind, observed LJs reviewer. By combining her novelists ear and journalists eye, Didion gives the reader a sense of the never-ending feeling of exile that is locked in the heart of every refugee. This remains a masterful polemic. Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I am one of those who absolutely love Didion's style. Her long meandering sentences, laden with subordinate clauses that wind down a long trail of adjectives and phrasings, remind me of Hunter Thompson on Sherry instead of meth, until reaching a conclusion that is at once obvious and profound. Ah, where was I?Oh yes, I was captured by Didion's "The Year of Magical Thinking" after losing a loved one, and found her book to be the only one that came close to capturing the sorrow and ennui of that period of my life. I love her ideosyncratic style, and it served "Miami" well. She serves up the threats unveiled and the danger open and unguarded as she talks political assassination and murder in the same breath as Cuban literature and culture. This book captures the mundane face of the patriot in exile who will stop at nothing to regain his homeland, even when that homeland no longer effectively exists. Miami has truly become America's Casablanca, and she looks it in the eye without flinching. A political and social study that is more timely than many current tomes.

This is an essential book about Miami in the 70's and the 80's. It explores all the implication that the influx of Cuban nationals had on the tip of Florida, the drug trade, the economic boom and later the rise in crime. This books doesn't sugar coat anything, and after reading it, you actually feel that you know too much and your life is in danger. It portrays a compendium of news, since Didion was a journalist, and you are basically getting unbiased information. Great book and a must read to those interested in Miami, Florida, or interested in Cuban politics.

The story of the Cuban exiles in Miami deserves to be told with drama and passion because that is what it has been. In this page-turner, Joan Didion captures the rejection and racism that the Cuban exiles first encountered in Miami when they emigrated from Cuba after Castro assumed power. She shows how some of the Cubans became successful businesspersons, political powerbrokers, shapers of local culture, renowned humanitarians and philanthropists, expert propagandists, able diplomats, drug runners, muggers, and internationally renowned terrorists. We see the close relationship the Cuban exiles formed with the USA government, especially its clandestine agencies. We learn that in the 1960s Miami essentially became a CIA recruiting and operational-staging center. Didion tells us that the CIA had as much as 120,000 "regular agents" (full and part-time) stationed in south Florida. It had a flotilla of small boats (often used for terrorist raids on Cuba), making it the third largest navy in the western hemisphere at the time. It owned airline companies in the Miami area and holding companies that lent itself loans for covert operations. "There were [also] hundreds of pieces of Miami real estate, residential bungalows maintained as safe houses, waterfront properties maintained as safe harbors" as well as "fifty five other front businesses" and "CIA boat shops," "guns shops," real-estate, travel and detective agencies (pp. 90-91).Yet the relationship between the Cuban Americans and the USA has been a troubled one. Although the Cuban Americans find themselves dependent on the USA for maintaining their struggle against Castro, they also don't trust the government, blaming it for their loss at the Bay of Pigs and for adopting policies soft on Castro. Likewise, the USA finds some Cuban Americans helpful in its secret foreign adventures (Chile, Nicaragua, Angola, etc.) as well as a nuisance when these terrorist elements assassinate foreign diplomats, blow up airplanes and banks, and murder USA citizens.Particularly poignant is Didion's description of the Cuban Americans' personal and often internecine struggle over understanding themselves as immigrants or exiles. These struggles have resulted in broken friendships, shunning, public ridicule, financial loss, bodily harm and death. The book only covers Miami until 1987. I wish Didion would update the book, although it might be dangerous for her to do so.This is a great read and well worth the purchase.

Joan Didion is a truly amazing essayist. This is not her most electric work, but it is no less amazing.

I used to grab anything that Joan Didion wrote for the sheer pleasure of reading her stiletto-like prose, her sarcasm, and the intelligence of her observations. However, I guess I'm over her; perhaps I've dumbed down, or perhaps this book is just too dated (it was written in 1987, and while the more things change the more they may stay the same, a great deal HAS changed). At a minimum, I have to agree with Mr. Blanton's review in many respects; Ms. Didion is writing more for herself than for any reader, though I would add that what I used to think of as sarcasm now seems extremely holier-than-thou and so impressed with itself as to be off-putting to the max.I also have to assume that the book is a compilation of articles that were intended to be read over time - perhaps over a long time. If that's correct, then putting them into book form does a disservice, because after a while you feel like you're reading the same thing over and over again. The sense that you're being beaten over the head with repetitious and smug observations is overwhelming and makes for a most unsatisfying read.If you want to read the best of Joan Didion, go back to "The White Album" or "Slouching Towards Bethlehem" - though I'm not going to re-read them for fear that it really IS all over now.

Book Club voted for this book because of all the interest in Cuba lately. Joan Didion is always a difficult read. She is brilliant and wants you to know it. Lots of multi syllable and Hispanic words, run-on sentences and convoluted double negative, sarcastic op-ed reporting. Couldn't make it through this dated book and neither did ANYONE else in the club, but we did learn some interesting Cuban history background.

i've always enjoyed Joan Didion, but after just a few pages of this book, I began to wonder "where the hell is the story?" Didion really outdoes herself in conspiracy theory without evidence. It's like a bad cocktail party at your first wife's house...you don't want to stay but the bad wine is free. And what's with, "I stopped by the coroner's office one morning?" Really, why that place? She doesn't really say. It's a waste of 2.99 plus tax for this book unless you like depressing French movies at 11 p.m. at night. Really, Joan, what the hell?

I highly recommend this autobiography. Zora Neale is amazing, her insight. Wow. I think I texted/emailed my friends nearly half the book.

Nora Neale Hurston wrote an interesting autobiography which is basically a "rags to riches" book. Her book is a lesson about rising above one's circumstances. In fact Hurston described herself as "sassy and NEVER accepting apprehensively convention wisdom. In other words, Hurston's book is one of encouragement following one's desires dreams rather than the status quo. The book should be required reading for those who have intellectual dreams but are afraid to try.Robert Hemenways's introduction is useful. While Hemenway described the book as peculiar, he is wrong. Hurston's autobiography is one of inspiration and careful reflection. While Hurston was not necessarily a political activist, whatever that means, she was astute. She scathingly denounced President Truman's order to drop atomic bombs on innocent civilians in August, 1945 when the Japanese were ready to surrender in February, 1945 per the MacArthur Memorandum in February, 1945. She also condemned the "war crimes" trials of Japanese leaders after WW II-whatever a war crime is. As Hurston commented. "...War is war."The introduction was followed Hurston's description of family life. Hurston's father migrated from Alabama to Florida where he became the mayor of the first incorporated black city in Eatonville, Florida. Hurston's description of the courtship between her parents was amusing. Hurston's father was a Baptist pastor who pestered Hurston's mother by writing notes in hymnals and flirtation. As Hurston wryly responded, her mother married "just to get rid of her father. What may surprise readers is that even among poor segregated blacks in the South, there was a "pecking order" and class distinctions. Hurston's father was of mixed race ancestry and was considered born out of wedlock.Hurston was consider "sassy" which relatives warned could lead to lynching or shooting. Hurston's father resented her being feisty, but her mother argued that such a feisty attitude was an asset since it could lead to independent thinking. Hurston's mother taught Huston grammar, reading, arithmetic/decimals, and whatever else the mother knew. This was rare among poor segregated blacks in the South.Hurston also described her childhood friends and the petty spats she had with her friends. For example, had a silly spat that the moon loved one girl more than the other. After an angry exchange, the two girls reconciled their silly spat. Hurston remarked that she liked to break curfew even if it meant a "whipping. As mentioned above, Hurston was "sassy." She was also very clever. Hurston got into a school in Maryland by lying about her age. She reported to be ten years young than she actually was. Hurston did well in school and was an eager student. In other words, Hurston realized that she was smarter than she was led to believe. As feisty and determined as Hurston was, she reported on her disappoints which NEVER led to fatalistic despair. When Hurston's mother died, her father remarried, and the second wife forced Hurston out of the house. Hurston had to reside with different family members and was starved for books. She got a break when she was hired as a maid in the North. She also worked as a waitress and got an acting "gig." She saved money and continued learning. She met two friends who were Fanny Hurst and Ethel waters who remained friends for the remainder of their lives.Hurston wrote a chapter title "My people! My people! which related the vestiges of US race relations. She also related that among blacks, she described them as "uncouth Negros and gentleman Negros. Yet, Hurston never let he success and fame interfere with her relations with others regard of wealth and reputation. Such an attitude influenced Hurston's religious views. She was an agnostic who considered that people were blessed by Father Sun, and that regardless of race, status, or wealth. As Hurston noted, we are part of the Cosmos, and such distinctions have little meaning "in the grand scheme of things."As stated above, this book should be required reading for young students to inform them what "guts" and determination can achieve regardless of one's social status. Hurston's book is a reminder of that what people can achieve in spite of disappointments and criticism. Her book is a n inspiration and tribute to the human spirit.James E. EgolfFebruary 24, 2016

In many ways, this feels like a rough draft. There isn't a clear through line or theme that ties the stories together, and the chapters at the end about romance, race, religion, etc. feel tacked on and incomplete, not as vital as Hurston's memories of childhood and adolescence. What kept me reading was her voice: always vivid and tough and funny with these flashes of pure poetry or emotion that felt surprising in the midst of a lot of tall tales.

It's great reading this because if you've also read Hurston's "Their Eyes Were Watching God," you can see where Zora got some of the material that appeared in her book. She assembles words with grace. She captures Southern Black dialect of the early part of the century quite well (I do remember that!), and her characterizations seem right -- according to a white person's recollection, anyway. (The preface by Maya Angelou strongly suggests she wrote for the white reader, not the black reader, which -- in my view is understandable since her teachers, professors, and other mentors were almost all white.) Wait -- I can't remember if Angelou's preface was in this one or in "Watching God" because I let someone borrow the two books. I think it was this one, though. But I couldn't down put either of the two books. She tells a great story without much apparent anger, with plenty of color and an overall nonjudgmental acceptance of the role/position of black people in the age in which she grew up and wrote. That role/position is not at all acceptable today. But these were different times, which is not to say the subordinate position was okay. But the fact that she writes about it in a matter-of-fact way possibly helps communicate emotions, motivations, thoughts shared between individuals who all lived within that culture, which is one of the many reasons it is a pleasant read, not a terribly disturbing read, and also, perhaps, therefore more enlightening to many than it might have been had it been interlaced with rightfully grudge-worthy terminology and thoughts. Many people probably would have ignored a book like that, while this one is a lot less likely to turn off readers, and therefore a lot more likely to inform that element that could be/would be turned off by a more strongly worded political tone. In addition to the cultural observations, the reader also gains an insight into the type of mind and type of loving upbringing she got from her mother (before her mother died) that was necessary for a bright black female to "make it" and gain a wonderful education in a white-dominated society. I'm personally sorry that she did not interweave the interplay of her personal friendships and romances over time with the scholastic, intellectual and literary aspects of her life. She separated those topics into chapters, and in doing that, I think, a lot of the potential struggles and conflicts she might have faced perhaps were left out. I got that feeling, anyway. Even so, it's a compelling read and one that I recommend.

Delightful gift for our godson's Baptism -- we love the gentle, peaceful illustrations. The text is well-suited for young audiences, too.

Cute book, not too wordy, great for a toddler-aged child!

reverent

Cute but definitely need extra stuff to go with it as part of a baptismal gift. My kids really like this author/illustrator. It was a gift.

Nice baptism story.

This book is fun and educational. I got this book for my daughter who is going into the second grade in a couple of months. She has always been fascinated by dinosaurs or anything related to science. She truly enjoys reading and has been tested at a 5th grade reading level. She had no trouble reading this book either. She said that she really liked the book. I asked her why and she said that she learned a lot by reading this book. Even though she already knew a great deal about dinosaurs. She also said that the illustrations were really great. I skimmed through the book myself and I would have to agree that the pictures in the book are pretty good. I would recommend this to any child who has any interest and dinosaurs I think they'll learn something and have some fun in the process. I did receive this book for free or at a discount for a honest and unbiased review. I rely on other Amazon reviews to determine how I'm going to spend my hard-earned money. If a product deserves a one-star I will give it one star. If a product deserves 5 Stars I will give it 5 stars. I hope you found this review helpful. If you did find this review helpful please click yes or on your mobile device click helpful thank you and have a great day

You would think a book titled Big Feet, Small Feet would be about feet! It isn’t. It’s about dinosaurs, and didn’t discuss their feet at all. It opened fine on my Kindle app for android. The book has lots of images and animated pictures of dinosaurs. They are 3-D renderings and aren’t super fancy, but they show the right dinosaurs for the descriptions, and for the little ones it’s more than adequate. The descriptions are very brief and use big words my kiddos didn’t understand. As I was reading it to them, I was able to explain most things, but I’m no expert and we actually had to look some things up. On one hand, this is good because it motivates them to ask and research questions. On the other hand, it’s hard for them to self-read and not terribly informative. It held their attention well enough, I’m just feeling like it didn’t cover much, but had a lot of photos. I suggest checking out the kindle version to preview before buying if you can.I received this book in kindle form for free in exchange for my honest review. I only review items I have used, and I assure you my review is unbiased and based on the quality of the product I received. My goal is to provide as much honest and helpful information as possible to help you make an informed purchase. As someone who shops primarily online due to health issues, I understand the importance of thorough and accurate reviews. I hope my review has helped you.

I got this ebook for my stepson who is 7 and loves dinosaurs. Unfortunately, I was quite disappointed with the quality of this book. For starters, the grammar is poor at best, to the point that even my stepson was noticing that sentences were not beginning with capital letters, and the tense of the words changing made it difficult for him to read. By the title of the book, I expected more about fossils, but there is nothing about feet or footprints for that matter. As well, the picture on the cover is a great one of a fossil. The pictures in the book were computer graphics and pretty poorly done at that. I am glad this ebook is currently being offered for free, as I would have been disappointed if I had paid for this. If this book were edited properly, and the time spent on the cover was applied to the pictures inside, the book has the potential to be much better for even the youngest of readers. At this stage though, there are much better options for your tiny dinosaur lovers. If this review was helpful, please rate it as such.** Disclaimer- while this product is currently being offered at a free price to everyone, I did receive notice of it's availability through a reviewer-based website. My review is based off personal use of this item by myself or my immediate family. I aim to give honest feedback on all product reviews and to answer the questions I would want to know as a buyer. I do the majority of my shopping on Amazon and rely heavily on consumer feedback for my product purchases. If there are any questions I can answer in regards to this product, I will do my best to do so.**

Big Feet, Small Feet: Book of Prehistoric Animals for Kids. Another great book for kids by Speedy publishing. The first page gives the definition of prehistoric. The pages are filled with drawings and renidtitions of what the artist thinks certain dinosaurs looked like. There are pages of Triceratops, Ankylosaurus, Pterodactyle (remember the "P" is silent in this word), Tyrannosaurus Rex, Brachiosaurus, Microraptor, and velociraptor with information and facts on each one of the previous dinosaurs. My grandson is in 3rd grade and this book would be awesome for him. I believe this book should be a part of his extensive library. Something that should be a great read for him. He reads way above his age as he grows so does his knowledge of the world as did his mother at his age. Reading invokes imagination, knowledge from a foundational status. Reading makes the brain work where television arrests the brain function by not making any one think. I so do love these books for children and adults, making us think about what we can do and what might be if we open our minds.****I am grateful to have received this product at a discounted or free rate in exchange for a honest, fair, unbiased and non-compensated review. If you feel that this review has assisted you in making your decision about this product or your shopping needs. Please press “yes” button indicating this review was helpful. This helps the sellers, as well as myself maintain a great relationship and the ability to be able to continue to give you the shopper a great relationship with the seller, if there is one.****
