I loved this book and I think it gives young designers a really good lay of the land as far as career direction and the job market. I found a lot of her advice a little bit advanced for me. I am a junior designer and much of the book seems geared toward designers who are mid-level. For example there is a lot of advice on starting your own business, on freelancing full-time, etc. However the parts of the book on resumes, looking for jobs, specializing, and interviewing were extremely helpful.Overall I think this is a great book. What I think it lacks is a lot of actionable advice. The author definitely leaves much of her observation open-ended. Despite that small downside and the fact that much of the book's topics are a little too advanced for someone like me, I think it is a book that all designers should have in their design library.

Such a great read! Well done! This is such a tough topic because as designers we are creative first. So we have to learn not to take critiques personally for one. We also have to realize that design by committee stinks. We must learn when to fire our clients. We must also learn to only show design ideas we like to the clients, because otherwise they would pick the one you don't like if you added it in their for good measure. It's the push pull of being a creative vs. trying to run a business. It talks about how to try to stay true to yourself creatively and to just go with it if a process gets out of hand, then move on.

Item was described as new, but on arrival it had slight damage on the cover.

A good read for someone about to enter the trade. Old news to anyone who has been there. The stories can be applied to many other professions too.

Good book for graphic designers! A good read.

I had to buy this book for class and I'm so glad I did. Definitely get the new version! (Most of the old one is available on google books for free anyway...) The edits are relavant to what's going on in graphic design now. As a student, I feel like this book contains a lot of helpful information not always taught in design programs. Get reading!

I first pre-ordered this book five months before it was even released, talk about the longest wait ever! Anyway, once I heard that doorbell ring I ran to the door, actually hugged the mail person, and tore the heck out of the packaging. There it was, a delightful incite on the magic that lies behind the mysteries of cake decorating. Not only is this a very visual book, as the title implies, there is so so so many tips and tricks my head was spinning. It not only amazes me the talent the author possesses, it also amazes me she has the skill to teach it in such a way that even beginners can create, what seems, these difficult projects. Not only does Marek give these wonderful tips, she includes tips and advice from leaders of our industry! You will not be disappointed.

Recently I decided I would like to learn how to bake delicious cakes from scratch to showcase some of my gumpaste creations. This book by Elizabeth Marek definitely fills the bill. It is well written and packed with great cake information. I read an interview that asked her what her biggest wish was for her book. Her answer was she wanted her readers to find her book useful and not to gather dust and that the pages become worn from use, dog-eared and stained with batter. I have not stained the book’s pages with batter, but I have certainly marked the heck out of it with my yellow highlighter. FYI: If you would like a way to easily adjust the ingredients required for her delicious vanilla cake for different yields of her 8-inch cakes (i.e. single, double, triple, etc. batches) Elizabeth has kindly included how to do it on her website: [...]

Best book ever! I know that this is much more than a book that I will sit and look at or read for tips or inspiration in cake decorating. This is truly a text book, a book that will most likely be covered in flour, sugar, and food color as I keep it nearby for reference. The instructions are detailed and wonderfully illustrated. What I love most is that this book is truly genuine, Liz has given us complete instruction to not only replicate the cakes in this book but to use those skills to be confident to create our own designs. Liz has also shared not only her successful techniques but has also shared her failed attempts and why they failed. I have read this book cover to cover and I can't wait to jump into my first project this weekend. I hope that this is only the first of many books to come by this artist. (I think I will order another for my bookshelf, one that will stay pristine ☺️).

The book did not disappoint! So many decorating books leave out key directions and terms, this book included many pictures and step by step photos, even photos of how the batter should look. Elizabeth has included items that you need to make your cakes stunning and they are not special tools, they're basics. I love that Elizabeth does not use anything "fancy" that you have to purchase overseas, you can find everything on Amazon. I'm very confident knowing that I can successfully create beautiful cakes, sugar flowers and more with the knowledge from Elizabeth Marek. One of the top 3 best cake books out there!

If I could give this book more stars, I would!!! Hands down the most informative decorating and baking book I have ever read. I couldn't put it down as soon as it arrived. Elizabeth covers everything from the tools and basics all the way to advanced structural cakes, including how to make the structures! I highly recommend this to anyone at any decorating level. In a field that is constantly changing, this book has knowledge that will be able to be used for your entire career/hobby.

I've been decorating cakes for over 30 years and I love this book! So much to learn! Great recipes to try! Techniques to master! Really, this cake is an incredible resource for those new to cake decorating and for veterans alike. The directions are clear, the photographs are excellent. Not only are there photos showing what a cake should look like, photos are there to tell you what doesn't work, as well. Tips and tricks from the top people in the industry are all through the book. I can't tell you how I wish this book would have been around a few decades ago when I was getting started. The author is generous is sharing her knowledge and is encouraging to her readers...how many other very talented people are willing to share the mistakes they have made? It makes you feel that you can accomplish your visions too! The book is a visual treat and a compendium of cake decorating knowledge. Well done!
