From the literary point of view, the work is poor and almost unreferenced... Mostly short stories/poems, sometimes meaningless or with a vague shadow of interpretation.Nonetheless, due to the scarcity of work produced in the area, it remains relevant in the context of erotics.

The book starts with a definition/discussion of the term two-spirit, which could encompass book all on its own. Louis Emse Cruz's Birth Song for Muin, in Red is another one that struck me, particularly the repeated theme of a "young girl in boy skin."As much as I'm drawn to the more straightforward narratives, pieces like William Raymond Taylor's Something Wants to Be Said, a poem that manages to evoke more emotion in a single page than most novels, and Qwo-Li Driskill's (Auto)biography of Mad, a back-of-the-book style subject index of his life, complete with page numbers and other references, absolutely demanded my full attention. At the same time, Dan Taulapapa McMull's wonderful poem, A Drag Queen Named Pipi, packs more wonder and beauty into its 5 syllable lines than should be possible.Ander's Awakening, by Daniel Heath Justice, is the longest piece in the collection and one that I had to read twice - once for the story, and again for the language. Young Ander views sees himself in dreams of an all-consuming spiritual fire that will change everything. The moment when he is gifted with his new name, Denarra Syrene, is one of the most beautiful passages I have ever read.An absolutely fascinating read, regardless of your race, ethnicity, sexuality, or gender, this is a book I am simply overjoyed I had the opportunity to explore.

Jacques Bertin is a French cartographer and theorist. In 1954 he founded the Cartographic Laboratory of the École pratique des hautes études and in 1957 he was named director of education. A colossal volume by cartographer and theorist Jacques Bertin. The first 15 of its over 400 pages delivered the most bang. Read the introduction to understand the book’s general theory and spirit. Then use the Contents to navigate to what interests you most.Like the earlier Enlightenment informers, Bertin makes strong connections between geographic maps and abstract statistical charts. I really like how he emphasizes the importance of producing informative singular images—temporal units of meaningful visual perception—while also negotiating how no one image can reveal everything.Bertin’s uses the word energy to describe the total salience of how data appears to us. It set the stage for many future authors to riff on their own systems of what Bertin called retinal variables: design dimensions that each have the ability to change how the value of a data mark hits the sensors of the eye’s retina. They include position, size, darkness, hue, texture, shape, and orientation. Info We Trust references Bertin’s work several times, and quotes him directly once: “The entire problem is one of augmenting this natural intelligence.”

Tufte's books have captured a lot of Bertin's message regarding the visual aspect of graphics (which is, in my experience, now all that is meant by "graphics"), and in a more clear, succinct, and possibly even comprehensive manner. However, _Semiology_ is about much more than what can be seen - it deals extensively with how to get an interesting story from information, which (if I remember correctly) Tufte does not address. I've only seen one other author deal with the process of sifting/sorting/refactoring to find interesting correspondences - Charles L. Owen (in Structured Planning, ) - though it is probably covered in many statistics curricula and is necessarily a part of graduate training in most fields, as Bertin predicts in this book's foreward.I would like to say that Bertin presents this important perspective/process in a compelling graphic way, but in fact the book is as dense and inconsistently structured as any of Tufte's great counterexamples. The figures are labelled in unpredictable orders on the page, some never mentioned in the text, and because of a mediocre printing job, many exhibit the very errors Bertin seeks to show how to avoid. Worse, these sort of problems are paralleled in the explication (especially with regard to showing a quantity vs. a quantity spread over an area, or Q vs. QS/S in Bertin's formalism), making it a significant challenge to figure out what is central to the argument and what is in the background.Still, the insight is in there, and the weaknesses are not too great to stop a determined or required reader. The book is full to bursting with myriad practical tips and tricks regarding not just how, when, and why to cram more information onto the page, but also how to decide what information the reader needs. More importantly, it shows how to "discover the groupings contained in the information" (pg 164), that is, to arrive at an understanding of the data without forcing them into a predetermined system*. This is highly significant, and if Bertin was among the first to capture it (even if somewhat obscurely) then this book deserves all of its renown and is sure to grow in importance.* this is a problematic thing to claim, but in this respect it's my summary which is inaccurate, not Bertin's concepts.

I knew the reputation of this work. It's a very impressive reference source. I've found it to be a necessary volume on my visualizations book shelf.I do wish I could find some companoion sources that address the digital formats we live and work with.

The book is a very good guide for the basis on how to construct diagrams and other graphics. The language used makes the book a little boring to read, but is absolutely necessary to understand the concepts behind the design of a graphic, infography, diagram, etc.

Bertin treats information transfer thru display in the French way, beautifully constructed texts and a severe logic.For people who grew up with Excell and quick graphs this text is a wonderful grounding in the structure and building blocks of information presentation.I enjoyed it very much indeed.And the book itself is nicely printed and bound. Which is good to see.Well worth every penny and the time to read it carefully. Recommended holiday reading.harry

This is a remarkable book. I've read Tafte books 2 years ago and after that was unable to find anything interesting or new in the Visualization field. This book was the first one that is comparable with Tufte work and even exceeds them. It provides very clear and beautiful theory of data visualization that you can apply on practice immediately. Yes, it is quite old, but it is absolutely relevant and has "fresh" feeling.

It's been 27 years since the first printing of this English translation by Berg and 43 years since the original French edition. Finally, the folks at ESRI Press managed a reprint. I can't provide better insight than Howard Wainer in his review (he wrote the preface to the original translated edition).This is the book that Tufte cribs off of. This is the definitive volume on information visualization and should be required reading for all cartographers. The book a treasure trove of significant ideas in information design, split into two parts: Semiology of the Graphic Sign-System and Utilization of the Graphic Sign-System.The first part analyzes the properties and rules of the graphic system breaking down the variants and invariants, the plane and the "retinal variables", and combines these and more into rules for construction and legibility. The second part breaks down applications of the graphics as diagrams, networks and maps. The only way the book could be made better would be trough a third section on animation (hinted at in the introduction to the English version).I have not had the change to check out the new printing but will ASAP!

This recipe book has got to be one of the best recipe books ever. And I mean - the instructions are exactly on point. If the book says you'll fry onions for 15 minutes, you'll fry them for 15 minutes. I love to cook, and nothing gets under my skin more than recipes that say "fry an onion for 2 minutes until golden" and you KNOW that it takes at least 15 minutes to have a golden fried onion, and then in reality, you spend 15 minutes instead of 2 minutes as the recipe called for. So, with this book, it says 15 minutes, it's 15. It says 2-3 minutes, it's 2-3 minutes. I love it. All quantities are also exact. I've made a lot of recipes from this book already, and they have all been 100% on point. Meera Sodha has got to be simply the best recipe writer.The recipes themselves are delicious and fairly easy to make (probably too complicated for a person who only knows how to boil an egg, but if you've done an entree before, then you'll be able to follow these recipes just fine). That said, this is an Indian cookbook, so you'll need the spices (and a spice grinder to make it really top-notch) to make these dishes. This cookbook also has recipes on how to make things like paneer (cheese) from scratch or make your own spice mix (garam masala), and I've done both, and it was incredibly straightforward. I'm amazed that I managed to make my own paneer, and it's all thanks to this book.Lastly, the author lives (and was born) in the UK, and she has a Western understanding of ingredients (i.e. limit the butter, etc). In her recipes and the short notes above each recipe, she explains how she deviates from the traditional recipes, if she does, and I like her honesty and her humor.If you want a great book on Indian cooking, get this one. It is one of my favorite cookbooks of all time, and I have a hefty collection of cookbooks.

I was a HUGE fan of Made in India, so eagerly awaited the US publication of her follow up. And so far, it's been great. I made the tamarind eggplant curry, and grilled cabbage with coconut, both excellent. Being that eggplant is a favorite of mine, I was excited to see an entire chapter dedicated to eggplant. I like the organization of the book, breaking things down by main ingredient. Overall, I highly recommend both this and Made in India (which has meat recipes if you're into that).

Love this book! I am not a vegetarian, but I do like to eat like one sometimes. This book, in conjunction with her other book Made In India, have some of the best recipes I have ever tasted. Highly recommended!

I absolutely love this book. Firstly, it's beautiful. Which who doesn't want a beautiful well crafted cook book with colorful vibrant pictures? Secondly, the set up of the book is delightful. Meera gives nice anecdotes to go with each recipe and chapter and explains things with grace and ease.Secondly, I love her 10 tips and insights at the beginning. (Particularly the piece about practice practice practice and that not all chiles are created equal. TRUE.)Thirdly, I've found that the recipes are easy to veganize (for all my fellow vegans out there). The recipes are more straight forward and less complex compared to Vegan Richa's Vegan Indian cookbook, which is nice for weekday cooking.Finally, and I suppose most importantly, everything I've made is delicious, flavorful, not too heavy, and a real crowd pleaser. I cannot wait to continue cooking my way though this book! Thank you Meera for sharing your delicious goodness with us all.

I've checked out Made in India several times from the local library and will eventually purchase it. Fresh India wasn't available so I caved and bought the kindle version, and it was worth every penny! The recipes are well written and entertaining, as they have a background story as it relates to her past/nostalgia/indian cuisine. Ginger, garlic, peppers, cumin, chili powder, coriander, turmeric, and various other spices are used to create flavor profiles I've never tasted before, despite eating in various Indian restaurants. Many of her recipes are simple and can be made in a pinch if one has an aptitude for cooking. The East African peanut cake is to die for! There's also a recipe for Indian street chai, which looks delicious, but I'm mostly vegan and haven't attempted it yet.

My new favourite cookbook! Recipes are easy, delicious, healthy, full of vibrant flavours and colours. I've already sent a copy as a gift - the first of many!

I bought Made In India when it first came out and LOVED it. Literally every recipe I tried was fabulous. Being a vegetarian, I was over the moon when Fresh India came out and I was not disappointed. I love the way the book is organized and the 3 recipes I have tried thus far are winners. The recipes vary in difficulty but I didn't find any too difficult. Awesome book!

This is an amazing cookbook. It has lots of information and tips about indian cooking. It is put together with beautiful binding photos and art, it's simply wonderful to flip through. The recipies are so fresh and creative
