A freelance writer/photographer and railroad enthusiast who is also a former editor of Pacific Railnews and the author of The American Steam Locomotive, Solomon presents an illustrated history of steam railroads in the United States and Canada. He surveys the beginnings of railroads in North America, how they became the dominant mode of transportation, and how they went into decline after World War II, focusing much of his book on the development and operation of various steam and early diesel engine types. While his discussions of steam and early diesel are the strength of the book, Solomon also briefly touches on electrification, stations, and trolleys and interurban systems. A final chapter includes information on various current preservation efforts and museums that document the history of railroading.
