Very funny book, lots of great satire in the book and would highly recommend (however if you are looking for a factual book this is not the one) but gives you funny insight on some things and can still be great fun and a great time to read. Makes me laugh everytime I open the book and I am looking forward to reading Jon Stewarts new book.

I was very excited to see this book, and I was a huge fan of America: The Book. This book was very disappointing when compared to America: The Book. There were some funny lines in it, but overall, it was just "enh". As an American Politics instructor who reviews hundreds of American Politics textbooks, America: The Book was hilarious cover to cover. This book just seemed forced, and I stopped reading it about two-thirds of the way through the book. I was bored by that point, and that is not a good sign.

If you like the humor on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," you'll love this book. Written as a manual or textbook about Earth for extraterrestrials, the tongue-in-ceek descriptions are often painfully hilarious, such as humans relationship with the weather, bacteria, and our own existence. My only quibble might be that the writing is sometimes too cluttered and small, but that could be because I'm a crabby old bat who hates to wear reading glasses. Young people might have no problem at all with the type size.

I have always loved The daily Show with Jon Stewart, but this is the first book of his that I have owned. If laughter is the best medicine, then this book should make even the gloomiest person smile. I laughed through the whole book. His satire and quick wit is absolutely the most entertaining I have ever experienced in written form. Aliens will surely find this a very whimsical, educational and enlightening guide to Earth and its Human inhabitants! I love it!

I view The Daily Show every night. It is my only source of news, as the "regular" news just tires me out with it's superficiality and chronic repetiveness. However, while I think this book is probably hilarious, I just couldn't get into it. Maybe I've outgrown this kind of thing. The few pages I did read seemed pretty sophomoric. I'm going to give it to my friend's two smart, rowdy boys. They'll love it.

Where do i start? I'd like to keep my review somewhat simple, in that i would rather not provoke or spark a political debate.I love The Daily Show, and The Colbert Report and this book is as good as both of those shows at their best. Very literally, this, in my opinion, is a quality piece of work! Most of this book is satirical, and not meant to be taken seriously; however, like The Daily Show, you have to be able to differentiate what is fact and what is fiction. In this spirit of the long running show, this book is fiction based on fact. And i've never read a book that has the two blended in a more entertaining way. This is basically a satirical textbook on Earth, and honestly, it actually reads and feels somewhat like one. Though It's infinitely more entertaining than any other textbook i've ever read. Nearly every picture is accompanied by a clever one-liner.Though the most surprising thing about this book is that while all of it is entirely dedicated to making fun of everything that has ever existed on the planet Earth, the base of most of the jokes are actually based on fact.I want to make it perfectly clear that I'm not trying to say that the information contained within this book or on The Daily Show is entirely fact, but rather putting a satirical spin on facts. This was definitely a book that I was constantly looking forward to reading because even after reading on the first couple of pages, i knew it was going to provide constant entertainment throughout the rest of it. Will definitely be buying America ( the book ) after reading this.

This book is a wonderful testament to Earth (The Planet) and her self-destroying people. A must read, packed with irony. Spoiler alert: it doesn't end well... for humans that is.

i got this one and the democracy one. really upset john is leaving the daily show. i hope he finds a new vehicle that he is happy with. maybe directing the one he made was like to artsy for me. like steel magnolias or something. idk. still enjoyed the daily show. that's why i bought these books.

Hamilton's famous 'haze look' is clearly evident, many of his subjects poses are one dimensional. I experienced many mixed emotions upon viewing this work. On one hand, Hamilton definitely is a very talented photographer. Other photographers have borrowed his ideas and techniques. However, the book is really more about his artistic technique with a camera than about the beauty of his subjects. I purchased this along with another book on Amazon, "Holy Nature: A Celebration of Naturism". Both books are created by photographers who seek to capture the beauty of the nude and nature. However, in the Holy Nature book, you can the photography is clear and the prints large and in color. You are seeing the beauty of the female nudes and their surroundings. In this book the beauty is often obscured by a blurry or hazy black and white image.

Good enough for the Hamilton fan but not very satisfying for this viewer.

Some people would argue about the content of this book. It has nudity shown in only a way that only David can present with tastefully. I would not call it dirty porn. I have seen a lot these women on other web sites. So the point of their age seems in question. If I can find them on Google search so I doubt their really under age as much as young looking women in artful photos. There is no sex in these pictures. I purchased the book used from a book store here in the states, used. Good for your collection if you like Davids books.

Great!

Frankly, I'm embarrassed about this purchase. While there is no doubting the artistic talent of David Hamilton, in this day and age the author would not be respected for his work.

High Over Rated Book. Photos are repetitious and not very well lit or composed.

Beautiful book. Many fine photos of beautiful young girls in their lovely age. Optimal size of book and true well prepared. This book is art generally and not a child pornography.I have absolutely no interest about child pornography, but I like Hamilton's book as really fine art.

The reputation of Hamilton suggested that this would be a valuable book on the subjects of his photography. While the quality of the paper and the printing was excellent, the photos fell short of what I had expected. There was far too much cropping of the photos, leaving out too much of the photo image. That was very disappointing. The artistic presentation and the verses for each photo were excellent.Next time, show the complete subject of the photo - - - don't cut off so much.

This review makes specific references to the Kindle version formatting (and issues in reading it) as well as the content of the book in general. For large chunks of this Kindle book, the author has chosen a funky font totally inappropriate for Kindle text-to-speech. It comes out as gibberish. For the content using an appropriate font, making it understandable, it was adequate but not nearly as helpful asGoodbye, Friend: Healing Wisdom for Anyone Who Has Ever Lost a Pet or The Pet Loss Companion.

EXCELLENT book!!! It was recommended to me when my cat died. Probably the most important thing I came away with is the notion that mourning a pet is just as profound as mourning a person. Sometimes more so. As the author points out, we spend more quality (touching, cuddling, etc.) time with our companion animals than we do in our primary relationships with other humans. I felt it gave me "permission" to experience my feelings.

Have really enjoyed this book, not only for the deep love of my own pets but that how important they are in our lives AND how we DEEPLY grieve the loss of what was a Family Member. I like the parts where you are asked to write your thought as it brings you through the process of losing that highly loved pet. We usually ignore the part that our pets will only be with us for a Season. We love them and they love back as if they will be with us forever. We need to live life as they did while they lived with us..... live each day to the fullest.....as if it's your last! Our pets have MORE to teach us than we could ever

After losing a much loved pet, my wife and I read this book and even bought a extra copy for my daughter. It's a clear, well written, easy to understand and very helpful book in understanding and coping with the grief associated with the loss of a four footed family member. My wife and I both highly recommend it.

Nothing in this world could have prepared me for the unexpected death of my pet. One morning, I found my beloved Choly dead. I remained in a state of shock for many days. I perceived neither hunger nor sleepiness, neither a need for coffee nor a need for water."When Your Pet Dies" offered me invaluable insight into the grieving process. What I also liked about this book were the exercises it provided us with: it asked us to write about our first encounter with our pet, our most treasured moments with our pet, and other things we wanted to share. I spent many, many hours writing about my experiences. I also spent many hours reading and re-reading important paragraphs in the book that I had highlighted during my first read. Needless to say, I spent hours and hours shedding tears of grief. What type of pain is worth acknowledging? This book will reassure you that the answer is entirely up to you. No one in your life is entitled to tell you that you cannot grieve your deceased pet or that you cannot allow yourself to celebrate and remember your pet's life. This book offered me tremendous comfort. I felt proud that I was allowed to privately, intimately, and painfully mourn Choly's sudden death.Until this day, I still choke up when someone asks me how Choly and his littermate are doing. I hope he did not suffer during the hours preceding his death. I understand that every variation of pain is different for each individual. If you have difficulty connecting with someone who understands pet loss or if you simply feel the need to grieve privately (as was my case), I would recommend this book to you.

This is a great little book. If you are grieving & having a extremely hard time like I am. You must get this book.I can't say enough about it.....

The book definitely helped me as I grieved the loss of my precious little girl. It was nice to read and know that all the sadness and various other emotions and thoughts were not just mine and many like myself had gone through this and this was normal to feel. I didn't use the sections where you're supposed to write because I couldn't do it without sobbing but I plan on doing it eventually. I recommend this book. Very short and well thought out and the stories of other people and their precious furry friends are heartwarming.

This is a concise guide to grieving, mourning and healing after pet loss. My grief is fresh as my husband and I unexpectedly lost our best-ever cat, Headley, five days ago. We've lost many pets in our lifetime (we counted nine in just the last nine years), so we're quite experienced with the situation, unfortunately.I took this to bed and read it in one sitting. Much of it is the same advice and guidance I've heard and read over the years on pet loss and bereavement. However, perhaps because it is so brief and there's no fluff, it was helpful. I never consciously realized there is a distinction between grieving and mourning. He lists helpful websites in the back and I've visited some previously but it's nice to have them listed in one place.I want and need something a bit deeper and this was not it.The book is only 96 pages, so it's a quick read.

I bought three different pet loss books after we had to put our almost 14-year old labrador to sleep in August, and this is the book I kept. I liked it so well that I ordered a copy for each of my young adult kids. This is a short book, with chapters on mourning, remembering, and healing. Each chapter addresses the very real grief that we experience when a pet dies, and the author is so wonderful about acknowledging how important our pets are to us, and that our grief is real, just like when a person dies. The book includes little stories from others whose pets have died and also touches on the feelings we have when we have to put a pet to sleep, when a pet dies in an accident, etc. And, there is a section where you can write your memories of the pet. Our dog's death was (and still is...) heartbreaking, but this book has helped. I keep it on my bedside table, and reread sections when I need a little comfort.

Review

“A compelling and powerfully written memoir about identity and coming of age. . . . If the outlines of Justice Sotomayor’s life are well known by now, her searching and emotionally intimate memoir, My Beloved World, nonetheless has the power to surprise and move the reader. . . . This account of her life is revealing, keenly observed and deeply felt. . . . This insightful memoir underscores just how well Justice Sotomayor mastered the art of narrative. It’s an eloquent and affecting testament to the triumph of brains and hard work over circumstance, of a childhood dream realized through extraordinary will and dedication.”            —Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times “The book delivers on its promise of intimacy in its depictions of Sotomayor’s family, the corner of Puerto Rican immigrant New York where she was raised and the link she feels to the island where she spent childhood summers. . . . This is a woman who knows where she comes from and has the force to bring you there. Sotomayor does this by being cleareyed about the flaws of the adults who raised her—she lets them be complicated. . . . ‘I’ve spent my whole life learning how to do things that were hard for me,’ Sotomayor tells an acquaintance when he asks whether becoming a judge will be difficult for her. Yes, she has. And by the time you close My Beloved World, you understand how she has mastered judging, too.”            —Emily Bazelon, The New York Times Book Review “With buoyant humor and thoughtful candor, she recounts her rise from a crime-infested neighborhood in the South Bronx to the nation’s highest court. ‘I will be judged as a human being by what readers find here,’ Sotomayor writes. We, the jury in this case, find her irresistible.”            —John Wilwol, Washingtonian “Sotomayor turns out to be a writer of depth and literary flair. . . . My Beloved World is steeped in vivid memories of New York City, and it is an exceptionally frank account of the challenges that she faced during her ascent from a public housing project to the court’s marble palace on First Street.”            —Adam Liptak, The New York Times “You’ll see in Sotomayor a surprising wealth of candor, wit, and affection. No topic is off limits, not her diabetes, her father’s death, her divorce, or her cousin’s death from AIDS. Put the kettle on, reader, it’s time for some real talk with Titi Sonia. . . . The author shines in her passages on childhood, family, and self-discovery. Her magical portraits of loved ones bring to mind Sandra Cisneros’s The House on Mango Street; both authors bring a sense of childlike wonder and empathy to a world rarely seen in books, a Latin-American and womancentric world.”            —Grace Bello, Christian Science Monitor “This is a page-turner, beautifully written and novelistic in its tale of family, love and triumph. It hums with hope and exhilaration. This is a story of human triumph.”             —Nina Totenberg, NPR“Big-hearted. . . . A powerful defense of empathy. . . . She has spent her life imagining her way into the hearts of everyone around her. . . . Anyone wondering how a child raised in public housing, without speaking English, by an alcoholic father and a largely absent mother could become the first Latina on the Supreme Court will find the answer in these pages. It didn’t take just a village: It took a country.”            —Dahlia Lithwick, The Washington Post “My Beloved World is filled with inspiring, and surprisingly candid, stories about how the Supreme Court’s first Hispanic justice overcame a troubled childhood to attend Princeton and Yale Law School, eventually earning a seat on the nation’s highest court.”           —Carla Main, Wall Street Journal    “Remarkable. . . . A portrait of a genuinely interesting person.”            —Michael Tomasky, Daily Beast “In a refreshing conversational style, Sotomayor tells her fascinating life story with the hope of providing ‘comfort, perhaps even inspiration’ to others, particularly children, who face hard times. ‘People who live in difficult circumstances,’ Sotomayor writes in her preface, ‘need to know that happy endings are possible.’”            —Jay Wexler, Boston Globe “Classic Sotomayor: intelligent, gregarious and at times disarmingly personal. . . . A portrait of an underprivileged but brilliant young woman who makes her way into the American elite and does her best to reform it from the inside. . . . I certainly hope My Beloved World inspires readers to chase their dreams.”            —Jason Farago, NPR“Vital, loving, and incisive. . . . In this revealing memoir, Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor candidly and gracefully recounts her formative years. Her memoir shows both her continued self-reliance and her passion for community.”            —Library Journal (Starred review) “Justice Sotomayor recounts numerous obstacles and remarkable achievements in this personal and inspiring autobiography. . . . Readers across the board will be moved by this intimate look at the life of a justice.”             —Publishers Weekly  “Amazingly candid . . . an intimate and honest look at her extraordinary life and the support and blessings that propelled her forward.”             —Booklist (Starred review) “Graceful, authoritative memoir. . . . Mature, life-affirming musings from a venerable life shaped by tenacity and pride.”            —Kirkus Reviews

This autobiography of Justice Sonia Sotomayor was an enjoyable read. It provided a lot of detail regarding her upbringing, which was very difficult, as well as her time at Princeton, Yale, and then her years as a prosecutor. Unfortunately, the one thing that I wanted to hear about was her time as a judge, and that is lacking in the book. Perhaps it is because she is planning on penning "My Beloved World - Part 2" at some point, or perhaps she has another reason. One might suspect (as she alludes to in the foreword) that she doesn't want to talk about her jurisprudence, but I think that she could have tackled this part of her life without getting too controversial.Despite the above, reading about Justice Sotomayor and her life was a pleasant experience and well worth the time I took to do so. For anyone with an interest in the Supreme Court or our legal system, I think that reading this book is a good use of your time.

I've read this book 4 times (so far), and have gone back to it when I've felt the need to be inspired and encouraged. Judge Sotomayor is very open in sharing about the struggles of her childhood, and how she dealt with that and propelled herself to where she is today. What set this story apart from others for me, was the honesty, humor and insight that she brings to her story-telling. Her story is remarkable not just for the professional success she achieved, but her ability and willingness to deal with the painful events of her life and to go beyond that and get to a place of forgiveness. I ended the book having great respect and admiration for the author, and thankful that she was willing to share so openly.

Throughout her early years and into her adulthood, Sonia Sotomayor has been open to listening and learning. Her passion became the Law and what it stood for. With her infatuation for Perry Mason (as a young girl), came her desire to practice law. And, her self-determination and self-efficiency, though she struggled with the poor neighborhood where she lived, and her fathers young death, she persevered. Graduating at the top of her High School Class, and then acceptance into Princeton (graduation Suma Cum Laud) and then attendance of Law Schoool at Yale, she kept herself focused. Ever striving to learn more and more. However, along with this determination came sacrifice. She dealt with the failure of her marriage, and even as an adult, prejudice in both College and in the workplace. She worked hard, earning all she accomplished and became a prosecuting Attorney for the New York City DA's office. After working there for several years (Quite successfully), she continued to focus on her #1 goal to become a Judge. So, she became defense attorney. Her judgeship came late, and then her nomination to and confirmation into the U S Supreme Court. Sonia tells her story with heartfelt emotions that is truly engaging.

I found parts of the the first half of the book - about her early childhood, a bit slow and hard to read, but the second half was for me, a real page turner. It's clear that she is both a brilliant and driven person, as one would expect of anyone who makes it to the supreme court. What's nice is that Sotomayor wrote every word herself, so instead of feeling like a typical professionally crafted biography, this feels a bit more like someone reflecting on her life for her friends and relatives. She intentionally stops right as she steps in to her current role as a supreme court justice. There is so much interesting stuff in this book - about her childhood, going to college and law school - her time as an activist, as well as her time as a prosecutor and in private practice, that I won't even try to summarize the high points. There are just too many. Suffice it to say this is a must read book.

WOW!!! GREAT GREAT BOOK...I just sent a copy to my Sister (Deltona FL) and Sister-in-law (Connecticut). I also purchased the children's bi-lingual book so they can read it with their grandbabies. I am waiting for the Teen book to buy it for my teen nieces...they need to read it and understand that they have to work hard to get up the ladder. When I started reading this book, I felt like connected Sonia and I all grew up in the same house, visit the same part of the Island and experienced the same things (home/school/work). It's strange but I am 1st generation born in Bridgeport, Connecticut and had the same experiences of our Puerto Rican Culture just like Sonia in New York. Coming from humble beginnings, a single parent raising 5 kids, managing to put us through Catholic School. My Mom sold Avon, knitted, sold food and still worked a factory job. I don't know how she did all this with $8,000 and put 4 kids in private school. All in all, if you are a Boriqua - buy it...whether in Spanish or English. Sonia - if you ever read this, I created a tree on Ancestry.com with all your information and ironically, I matched family on Mercedes side and your Mom side. So weird but I do have family that went to NY in the early 1900's from my Great Grandma side but we lost contact. There were my great grandma's brothers Benito and Geraldo Perez from the Bronx. I know Generaldo had twins born on Xmas Day and one of them is Luis and they were in the military. Hopefully someday, I can connect with their children.Thank you for your not holding back, sharing the good, bad and ugly. Thank God that they put you in the Supreme Court because you would really understand the cases having to do with the poor, the imprisoned... and so much more. You have a better understanding to the streets smart than those in the ivy league world or book savvy (not real world experience). Many blessings to you and your family. Sincerely, Carmen @Carmen@arribaelson.comThis book is a testament that you can come from no money and raise to the top, regardless of your circumstances. What helps us in our culture is that we care for our elders til their dying days and they also give us so much love in return. I was also fortunate to have a beautiful grandma because my Mom was also working so hard. Like Sonia said, it's natural for us the female to take the roll of a young Mom at home to care for the rest of the family (cooking, cleaning, caring for siblings).I too am a 1st Graduate in my house, & this year both my daughters graduated

Review

‘Nigel Roberts’ new guidebook to Belarus, just published by Bradt Travel Guides, is authoritative and insightful … This is the Belarus which is very competently mapped in the first ever English guidebook to the country … Nigel Roberts, author of the new volume, has produced a text that is authoritative, insightful and helpful for travellers to the country … Getting to grips with Belarus isn’t easy. Roberts has managed to get beyond Soviet-style monuments and hotels with dreary décor to write with enthusiasm about everything from Belorussian bathhouses to Old Believers. He is particularly strong in his accounts of everyday life and culture. The volume has decent coverage of Belarus’ six major cities… Roberts is strong again on national parks and nature reserves, a theme that has always been a feature of so many Bradt guides. And there are some wonderful descriptions of the extreme southeast of the country, an area devastated by fallout from Chernobyl.’ Hidden Europe.

The Bradt guides are generally quite dense with important information, and this one is no exception. In general, it is difficult to locate guides about Belarus, and this one is quite helpful in that it also includes little snippets of stories about what life is like for those living in Belarus. It paints a realistic picture about the challenges and joys one might encounter while traveling there. The main complaint I have with the Bradt guides is that I wish they would include more visuals alongside the text as well as use a font that is a bit more readable than they one they have selected (too tiny!!). Overall, it's a great guide.

On my trip to Belarus in Aug 2014 half the people had this guide, most likely because it seems to be the only English guidebook for the country that is available. It was slightly out of date, with some of the conditions in-country no longer applicable, but the book was really quite useful overall for general tourism.

Excellent book, well written, beautiful photographs, lots of personal experiences of the author dealing with his frequent travels in Belarus, a country he obviously loves.

I really like the style of the author, it really brings Belarus closer to the Reader. Only thing I do miss from this guide are pictures.

an eyeopener in terms of the restrictions of Belarus--permission to enter, visa, etc. I am going there and this book has been very valuable. I learned to not answer the phone after I get in the room or answer the soft knock at the door by the lady of the night! There are many spectacular sights in Belarus

Good, and balanced. Much better than the Lonely Planet (Russia/Belarus)

I always buy a Bradt guide when I travel, if there is one available for the country. This is because they are much more insightful than the likes of Lonely Planet and will often be scribed from 1st hand local knowledge. Unfortunately, Dr Roberts has really let Bradt's image down on this one.I've lived in Belarus for the past 2 years and used the 1st edition guide to travel around as well as a source for what to see and do whilst in Minsk. I have now given up on this guide and have oft indulged in a long conversation with other ex-pats here about how Belarus is really lacking an informative guidebook (LP's Russia & Belarus is even worse than this offering). To start with Minsk, Dr Roberts recommends the bars and restaurants that any visitor would see walking down Nezavistimosti Avenue or in any of the squares. The real gems that are well known amongst anybody that has spent more than a few days in Minsk are notable by their absence. This is a real disappointment and the sad fact is that anybody with this guide is more likely to end up in TGI Friday's for dinner (perhaps the worst TGI Franchise you'll ever come across) rather than in one of Minsk's many excellent and individual bars, cafes or restaurants. Whilst he may have gotten the main tourists sites right, he has missed the multitude of quirky and zany aspects of this city that makes it wholly unique in Europe.Unfortunately it doesn't get much better as you leave Minsk. Dr Robert's almost totally ignores the impressive city of Mozyr, he glosses over the veritable treat that is the Braslau Lakes and barely gives Grodna, Mogilev and Vitebsk their due. A restaurant that he recommends in Grodna was a standard, awful and unfriendly offering that exists everywhere in the country and locals avoid like the plague. In Vitebsk he avoids points of interest such as Belarus' largest Disco and points the reader towards chain pizza joints. Most shocking perhaps (in the first edition, I've not yet seen the 2nd) was the fact that Dr Roberts failed to note anywhere that the City of Polotsk is claimed to be the geographical centre of europe by the Belarusian government. Whilst more learned geographers would tell you this is just outside of Vilnius in Lithuania, the fact that Polotsk has a memorial to "The Centre of Europe" is a salient fact of the town and I am stunned that Dr Roberts missed. It is a joke amongst anybody who has read this book that Dr Roberts urges people to spent "at least a full day each" at Mir and Njasvizh, both of which anybody would struggle to amuse themselves for more than 3 hours in.Taken as a whole, I can only assume that Dr Robert's time in Belarus has been spent in a small area and that his tour of the country was whistlestop at best. A very disappointing and underwhelming travel guide is the result. However, still the best on the market. Maybe a real gap exists for the likes of Rough Guide or DK if the market exists. Who knows...
