About the Author
Bruce Gamble is an award-winning author and historian who served as a Naval Flight Officer during the closing years of the Cold War. Medically retired in 1989, he began working for the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation before turning to freelance writing. One of the most respected authors on the war in the Pacific, Gamble has written seven books and has appeared in documentaries produced by History Channel, Fox News, PBS, and the Pritzker Military Library. He lives near Madison, Georgia.

In the early days of the Pacific War after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, things looked mighty grim for the Americans and many of their allies, especially Australia. Faced with a seemingly unstoppable foe, America was reeling from multiple defeats and Australia was on high alert over the possibility of a Japanese invasion. Thrust into this highly volatile situation was a small band of American B-17 bombers and their crews in the hopes they could help turn back the Japanese and keep Australia safe. This is the story of those bombers and their crews.Beginning with some background on both the B-17 and the crew members who would take them into battle, the book follows them as they fly to Hawaii...right as the Japanese are attacking Pearl Harbor. The story of each bomber is given, along with plenty of personal recollections of what it was like to be there on the Day of Infamy. After spending some time in Hawaii, the planes have to fly a very long way to Australia, stopping at various points along the way, before finally arriving in a situation which left much to be desired: poor facilities, virtually no spare parts, an incredibly long supply line (which wasn't fully functional for quite some time), a plethora of insects and other pests, disease and the ever-present threat of the Japanese. With the help of the Australians, the bombers were able to carry out a variety of missions, many of which are described in great detail such as the rescue of General MacArthur from the Philippines, various bombing raids against the Japanese base at Rabaul, and the very daring Royce Mission.Author Bruce Gamble has written a fantastic book about these brave men who were facing extremely long odds, but still went out and carried the fight to the Japanese as best they could. It's a definite testament to the perseverance and fortitude of both the Americans and Australians as they found themselves thrust into a terrible situation, yet one in which they managed to have a meaningful impact on the outcome of the war. A great read with excellent flow which you will find hard to put down!
On December 7th, 1941, the Japanese attacked the American base at Pearl Harbor. During the attack, a flight of B-17 bombers arrived on the scene. Unarmed, these planes were forced to land while shaking off attacks from Japanese fighters. These men would go on to compose the "Kangaroo Squadron".Based in Australia, these heroic men would be among the first to strike back at the Japanese. After their ordeal of landing at Pearl Harbor, these men began the task of searching for the Japanese. Often flying in planes that were in constant need of repair, they attacked Japanese bases throughout the South Pacific, including the big Japanese base at Rabaul.When General Douglas MacArthur was ordered to leave the Philippines by President Roosevelt, it was the Kangaroo Squadron who sent planes to retrieve him, his staff, and family. These fliers helped hold the line in the Pacific until reinforcements arrived in the fall of 1942.Author Bruce Gamble has written an excellent book about one of the lesser-known squadrons of the war. Using first=hand accounts from both American and Japanese participants, Gamble brings the early days of the war in the Pacific to light. This book reads like a fine novel and is packed with accounts of the harrowing missions flown by the Kangaroo Squadron. Gamble is one of the leading experts on the war in the Pacific, and his Rabaul trilogy is one of the best accounts written on that particular campaign. Kangaroo Squadron rates on the same level. Thrust unarmed into combat with their arrival in Hawaii during the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor by Japanese warplanes, the men of what would soon become the 435th “Kangaroo Squadron†of the Fifth Air Force fought their way through the darkest days in the Pacific War. I was privileged to be born to 435th pilot John Wallace Fields. Because I began attending bombardment group reunions with my father at an early age, I became acquainted with many of the officers and enlisted men of the 435th Armed Reconnaissance Squadron of the 19th Bomb Group, from Gen. Eugene Eubanks, the commander of the 19th Group, to Fred Eaton, pilot of B-17 41-2446 (the Swamp Ghost); many of the Swamp Ghost crew; Frank Bostrom, who flew General McArthur out of the Philippines; to Earl Williams, the last survivor of the Kangaroo Squadron. From my close association with these men I learned many of the stories that are contained in Bruce Gamble’s wonderfully written and meticulously researched history of the Kangaroo Squadron. As well acquainted as I am with many of the stories, I confess that I felt the tension of the times as Bruce detailed them in his book with an unfiltered, fresh, and educated eye, making it all new again.As a result of my association with these largely unsung heroes of the early air war in the Pacific, I developed an abiding desire to see that the Swamp Ghost, which went down on their first mission out of Australia, be recovered from the swamp in which it force-landed in Papua New Guinea on February 23, 1942. I worked on this project for over a quarter of a century with many institutions and individuals, culminating in the rescue of the Swamp Ghost as a member of a team headed by my dear friend, Fred Hagen, in 2006. I have now had the satisfaction of seeing the Swamp Ghost safely installed at the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum on Oahu, where she now rests in a battle-scarred sea-plane hangar on Ford Island. In Kangaroo Squadron, Bruce Gamble has made it all come to life and immortalized a proud but little-known group of men who were the point of the spear for America, at a time and in a place when spears were hard to come by. As the proud son of a Kangaroo Squadron pilot, and a friend of many 435th members, I give Kangaroo Squadron five stars, on my behalf, and theirs.
