Kimberly Shursens newest book Conviction gets 5 stars!! Conviction is another controversial book that starts off slow as you learn the back round of each character. As the book goes on, you are launched into a million different emotions with each of the characters. Eventually as all the pieces fall into place the ending has your mouth hanging open saying "I never saw that coming!" (please don't go to end to read it) I actually had to go back and re-read the last few page's because I couldn't believe what I was reading.You can't help but fall in love with Lillie, Zeb and most importantly T.J.Kimberly thank you again for another thrilling and exciting read. I am looking forward to your next book. You cease to amaze me with each book. Each book is better than the one before!

Kimberly Shursen is irritating. I was on a six-hour flight and took plenty of paper work with me. Unfortunately, I went to "Conviction" instead of working. I was just going to read for a few minutes. I ended up reading the entire flight; I got no work done. Kimberly's books grab my throat and heart. My throat because the twists and turns in her novels grab me and won't let me quit reading. My heart because I can feel my heart rate racing. "Conviction" deals with one of the most difficult people to rehabilitate...emotionally, relationally and spiritually. That person is the religious zealot who reads his scriptures and applies and lives them in a twisted way...and thinks he is on a God-ordained mission. Such a person completely violates Jesus' words to take the log out of our own eye before we take the speck out of our brother's eye. Once again, Kimberly's creativity, writing abilities and research make for a fast-paced, exciting and fun read. Rev. Dr. John Vawter

As always, I thoroughly enjoyed this latest Kimberly Shursen novel. I actually know Kimberly IRL so it is amazing to me that I am friends with such a talented writer - particularly since she's had a successful carreer and life as well as other artistic endeavors but didn't start as a novelest until she was.... (not gonna say - but she isn't as old as me :)I've recommended her books to friends and no one has ever told me that they weren't delighted with the read. Can't wait for the next one!

I've been a follower of Kimberly's books from the beginning. I'm always in "awe" with each one. I always try to become one of the characters of the book....and this one was the best! I thought I'd read a few chapters on my day off, then finish it later.....NOT! It held me captivated until the end and then I was what? Did it just end this way? I am so looking forward to the next one......Keep up the good work Ms. Shursen....... I'll be patiently waiting for the next one!

I have read every book from this author and found this one to be most sinister in many ways. It was not predictable at all and really quite scary as this book describes things that are going on in the world today that I would rather not know about. It took me a few chapters to get started but once I got there, I just had to keep reading. Highly recommend this book as it will challenge your standards of what is normal, what normal really is and what we wish "normal" to be.Great author.... Waiting for the next one.... :)

I'm so happy the book finished with"THE END...for now".Just like all of Kimberly Shursen's books, Conviction has you wanting to learn more about each character. If you put the book down, if you HAVE to, you are still left wondering about the story or people in it as you go about your day.You're drawn into the mind and life of a psychopath who believes he's doing God's work. Once you reach the end you think it's over but you're in for another story that just begins. Conviction is a must read!

What a excellent read!! Once again, was not disappointed at all with yet another book by Kimberly Shursen!!The story really grabbed my attention right from the start and I was on the edge of my seat at the end!!

I read this entire book in one sitting. The book consisted of interviews given by Donna Smallin Kuper to seven organizers. The interviews were interesting; each organizer had her own ways of approaching problems of chronic disorganization, hoarding, mental illness, aging, and the like. There were some good organizing tips. More of the book was Q &Q that focused on each organizer's approach and treatment, how they gained trust or worked with their clients, and their thoughts about chronic disorganization, hoarding, and other issues. Many issues were covered in the interviews. The one takeaway thing I came out with is that each organizer was truly there for her people. Even while working with serious problems such as mental illness, depression, OCD, Aspergers, hoarding, trauma, traumatic brain injury, and other issues, the organizers tried to team up with mental health professionals for a more comprehensive treatment plan. I also felt that each of these people loved what they did and saw the people as more faceted than any of their problems or pathologies. One organizer even recognized that the people who needed this help the most were often poor and therefore not able to receive it, and she expressed her frustration with that, and what she was doing about it. I also liked that most organizers gave the distinction between situational disorganization (ie death of a parent) and chronic disorganization (been a problem all of one's life). I learned many helpful and insightful things in this book. It was great to see hoarding and other mental issues de-stigmatized by these organizers, through their recognition that the person treated often has a lot more going for them than just the diagnosis - and at the same time, how a helpful diagnosis can help de-stigmatize the situation for the chronically disorganized.If you are looking for a "how to" get organized book, this is not the book for you, although there are a few helpful things geared toward the "alternative thinkers" that these organizers often find themselves treating. If you are looking more for the why and how of working with chronically disorganized people, or thinking of becoming an organizer or therapist to work with this population segment, this would give you some idea if this line of work was for you. I think it is good reading for anyone.

It seems a long time since I finished a book. Moving, boxes and boxes and boxes. I feel I may never get finished with this move. But the mess I left behind, I never want to see again. After a couple years of the fibro getting me down and keeping me in bed the place was a mess. I have to admit it was a mess. But I was in bed. When you're in bed you don't feel like cracking the whip on anybody else. And they don't see it like you do, they don't see the mess, they don't care, or they think I'll get up and do it even though I'm hurting. And my brain wasn't working. I did what I could do, and I read a lot. In those worlds my life wasn't messy, I had adventures.Thank goodness for summer. I finally felt good. I had a chance to go on road trips. I got to go swimming and I felt good! And in all of that I found hope again. And possibly, I found some answers for my health. Because whatever I'm doing now must be working. Even though I've walked 3 miles every few days and have muscle aches, I still didn't get a flare. Is it the magnesium? Is it the extra B vitamins? Is it the extra calcium and D vitamins? Is it the elevation here in Christmas Valley or the barometric pressure or the lack of humidity? Is it the combination of all of it plus a new life in my own adventure? I don't know. But while I feel good, I want to organize and get my life together.So I've been collecting books about housekeeping, organization, and decluttering, those kinds of books. But I dreaded reading them. You see, long before fibro, I knew I had ADD/ADHD. Organizing is a problem for people like me. There are shiny chickens everywhere. Cleaning out the closet may find me putting together a new hobby or finding something new to research. That's me when well. Add pain and exhaustion to that and nothing will get done. And here is where the book I just read comes in.This was not so much how to book though there is a little of that in there. This book feels like I got to meet a whole lot of organizers, who were also counselors. Each of the counselors has her own way of dealing with people and has a specialty of types of people that they deal with. Many organizers deal with people who have money. These people can afford to have all the shelves put in and closet arrangers that they need in their houses to get organized. When you're poor, you can't afford that. When you're poor, you need to organize even more, but you don't have the money to hire an organizer or have the money to hire a housekeeper. One of the women interviewed talks about taking this whole subject on. I hope they can find help for all of us who are in that position.Another person interviewed takes on the issues that a person with ADD/ADHD must contend with. And yet another takes on the issues that senior people have. Like me. When you had problems in your life, health problems or psychological problems that set you back when there's no one to help you, the problems just get worse. Your place becomes a health hazard, accidents are going to happen when you can't walk through the place with plenty of room. And it was a relief to see that these people in this book are looking at these issues and seeing them as true challenges.Sometimes you feel somebody out there does care. This book helped me feel that. It helped me to see how to read the rest of the organization books that I've picked up. To realize that these are tips and tricks that work for some but not for everyone, but to collect what works for me. And to realize I'm not alone.This book was free when I got it. Now it is $3.99 I think. Still I think it's worth it. It's a good starting book. I'd like to read the rest of the series. This was only volume 1.

A couple good points for people who fear becoming hoarders, but more a book showcasing professional organizers than one actually helping people get organized. Might be considered a C.V. of potential employees rather than any kind of self help book. I suspect most people with a high level of organizational problems couldn't afford hiring a pro. Still, I came away with two lessons-suggestions I might not have otherwise had. It also does one unexpected thing, it shows that professional organizers generally don't think of the disorganized as hopeless, lazy slobs, which encourages people with difficulties to get help without being ashamed. That was very heartening. You would assume a lot of heavy handed judgement, but there wasn't any.

Good book. A little unusual, as it is set up in interview format. But I got the point of view of many different experts in the field. I was reading for myself, but mainly because my mother hoards things and it is getting very close to the time to make other living arrangements for my parents. My mom thinks she is going to clean out the rooms that hold all of her stuff that are a terrible mixture of true treasures and trash before that can happen, and I know I will be trying for at least a year after they are in heaven sorting through stuff. (And she will never let me a long as she is living.) The information on hoarders and collections in this book game the the insight I needed to stop trying to force her process. There are other books after his one. I would like to find a way to get them, without paying as money is so tight for us. I did get this book for free on a daily special, but it is worth the price.

I looked around and Jutoh was highly recommended and reasonably priced so I decided to give it a try.I was intimidated at first by the learning curve but the sample book / tutorial was very good and got me started. But as I worked I found I still had problems. Mostly related to graphics and getting the table of contents exactly how I wanted.I had two projects. One for a good friend was a normal flowable text book with a few tables (Looking Past the Next Paycheck by Robert Robinson) and the other for my brother was a child's picture book (Friends of the Greenman by Clyde Daugherty). The picture book was more challenging but with the information in "Professional Kindle Publishing With Jutoh: Beyond Word: a guide to importing, editing and creating ebooks professionally for Kindle" by Julian Smart I was able to get both projects done and published on Amazon.Now I've even used Jutoh to output the text book into an odt file then use LibreOffice to turn that into a pdf and publish the book on Amazon as a print on demand paperback. I am currently working on the print edition of the picture book.If you are serious about getting an ebook formatted and published I highly recommend using Jutoh and getting this book to get the most out of the program.

I self publish and used paid services for my last series. They turned out crappy at great expense. Now I have Jutoh which is easy-peasy and some formatting templates and I'm doing my own, under my own imprint. Take that overpriced self-pub vultures!

Obviously, I like Jutoh itself...I wouldn't necessarily recommend this book as a first introduction to it. For that, just download the software and try the "Quick Start" from the Help menu. But the book is excellent, informative, and extremely useful.There's always a learning curve, and the world keeps changing. I mean, I loved using Writer's Cafe (also by Anthemion software). It was so much nicer than Scrivener, especially for outlining. But with the mobile world, I started doing my edits in plain-text files using Markdown for formatting. Scrivener would sync those text files to a folder I stored in Dropbox, so I could edit on my phone (meaning an Android device--Scrivener also has a version for iOS). Writer's Cafe wouldn't. So I switched...but I wasn't happy to let go of an old favorite.But now a new question has started to arise, with Scrivener 3 and its improved support for styles: should I keep using Jutoh at all? And I have to say the answer is an unqualified YES!!! Jutoh is simply better at everything ebook-related than Scrivener. There are more options, and frankly I think the program makes more sense. This book helped me to make that decision.Sadly, for POD books, I still have to import everything into Adobe InDesign to get the formatting exactly the way I want it. Speaking of learning curves...but moving my work from Jutoh to InDesign is simple, and for fiction at least there's not much left to do afterward.Anyway. I do my writing mostly in text files. I use various tools to edit them (JotterPad, Typora), but Scrivener is the glue holding things together. Once I'm ready to publish, though, I compile to HTML and move everything to Jutoh. Any further edits (front or back matter changes mostly) happen in Jutoh, which actually has a good enough editor that I might just write everything in it to begin with if I didn't want that mobile flexibility.A very good book, by a very smart guy, who has been creating quality software for writers for a decade that I know of.

I loved seeing the specific results that occurred after Dennis experimented each time.Reading about Dennis’s struggles is something that every business owner can relate to. While many of us relate to his problems, it was refreshing to see real solutions to each problem. What I thought was great about this book was the originality. Robert instructs Dennis to try different experiments to help him lead a happier life, and they were all so simple. Many of them made me say, “Why didn’t I think of that?”My only negative comment was the font used for his sessions. I loved the sessions because I felt like it made me stop and reflect on each new goal. But the font was kind of hard to read; it could’ve just been me, but I would’ve liked for it to be easier to read. They are downloadable, though, which is very convenient. Another thing to mention is it takes a few chapters to get to the meaty stuff, but it has a point in doing so. Just stay with it and keep reading—you’ll be so glad you did.Bonus: One thing I didn’t even realize was that you can sign up for support after reading The Experiment. That was a fun bonus that I think more books should do.After reading the book, I have new, specific goals for myself. This book taught me to try new things and—you guessed it—experiment. Whether you’re just starting out in the business-owner world or have been a CEO for twenty years, this book will give you a whole new perspective on achieving the most coveted thing in the workplace: happiness

"It's never about where we are at now, it's about the ferocity with which we focus out attention on improving those areas. It's the courage that we show when experimenting with new ways of living life, because doing so leaves us vulnerable." This book is FULL of so many great points. I felt like I was working with the "coach" through my own issues, soaking in his advice and digging deep into the experiments I can put in place. Not only does it boost confidence to realize the small steps are so do-able, but it's a great reminder of the feelings that come with being human, and the ferocity it takes to make a change. Stress is manageable. Life should be lived by design. So change the things you can control- YOU, and the rest of it will take care of itself. I appreciated the repetitive reminders that stress comes from trying to change the things we'll never be able to. All we can change are our habits, and the way we talk to ourselves. I'd recommend this book for anyone stuck in their ways. If we view "commitments" as "experiments", it's no longer a huge mountain. It's just a temporary decision which could have a positive impact for good!

For those of us within the motivational industry or for those of us who read self-help or motivational books regularly, it can often be difficult to find something new that is added to the conversation. Thankfully, R. Michael Anderson avoids this problem with The Experiment. Without giving away too much of the main idea, I'll simply say that this short book is worth the time. There's really only one main idea, but it's practical, uncomplicated, and it works. And it works because even if it doesn't, you can keep trying until it does. That's all I'll say. Read the book.In regard to the writing style, it also works. Couching the main idea in a fictional but realistic setting keeps the reader interested and wondering what will happen next to Dennis, the beleaguered CEO of a successful but struggling business.Mr. Anderson's work is original and interesting and a good investment of time. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to make changes in their lives.

AMAZING read!! I have been struggling through so much emotional and physical stress in my life and have purchased several books on self help and how to manage stress. Like SO many others, I am juggling work, raising children, caring for sick and aging family members while trying to keep my head on straight and not end up in the hospital myself. I have ZERO time to sit and read these days, but this book literally took me less than 2 hours to get through and I am blown away!!! Thank you R. Michael Anderson for teaching me in the most simple terms how to make the changes I so desperately need. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Perhaps because the steps toward improvement are written as a series of experiments, I found it easier to read. The author shows how a coach, by gradually introducing each experiment to an over-worked businessman, helps him get his life under control and improve both his professional and personal relationships. It is so clearly explained that anyone could benefit from its message.I recommend it highly.

I am ambivalent about this book. The parts about Mei Lien and her family 100 years ago are gripping and very well written. The modern-day events often made me think I was reading something slightly above a harlequin novel. The characters felt flat and the modern-day plot would have been at home in a romance novel (minus the bodice-ripping.) Inara's agonizing that she cannot tell Daniel and his family about her ancestor's actions seemed especially contrived. This could have been a great novel if Estes had just stuck with the long-ago story. Such great characters to build on! How about telling us the life story of the child instead of the Inara story - that could have been riveting! A great editor could have coaxed a great novel out of this, because the raw material and skill is clearly there. Instead, we got great history and - forgive me - sappy presence. I really would like to give 3.5 stars, but that is not possible, so I'm going with three - because in my book, it does not rise to the level of 4 stars because of the modern-day part.I appreciate Estes shining a bright light on the way the Chinese were treated in the late 19th century.

The storyline is good enough. I wish the story itself weren't so depressing, but not all stories can have happy endings, and I accept that.The thing that really kept this from being a good book, in my opinion, was the lack of character development. I had no sense of Inara's or Daniel's personalities, or even what they looked like. Inara's dad was a jerk, but that was never addressed, and Inara didn't even seem to realize it. I found their romance to be ridiculously fast-paced and disappointingly bland. Not really knowing the characters, I was unable to get emotinally attached to them, which just made the dating part so boring.The modern-day ortion of the book was boring and trite...the historical part was interesting at first, but then became so tragic, I was tempted to just stop reading. The lack of character development actually helped in that area, as I was able to separate myself from the worst, saddest part.The storyline is interesting, though. With better story-telling, this could be a great book.

I can't even begin to say how much I loved this book. It brought out emotions in me that I never would have expected. This is the story of a young Chinese-American woman whose family is forced to leave the United States. All the Chinese in Seattle, US citizens or not, are rounded up one morning and made to buy passage on a ship that's said to be heading to China. (Sounds similar to current events in the United States.) It isn't. Overhearing a conversation between the ship's owner and it's captain, the girl rushes to tell her father the fate that awaits them, and it's not a good one. He takes action and makes her jump into the water in the hope that at least she will survive and make it back to land. She's seen "falling overboard" and rescued by a kind and caring man who takes her back to his farm and nurses her back to health. In time, they marry and lead a fairly happy life, having a child. Water, however, is always a malevolent character in this story.The take of Mei Lein is juxtaposed with that of Inara Erickson. Inara has just received finished school with a degree in International Business and has recently inherited the family's estate on Orca Island off the coast of Seattle. While her father insists she take a job with Starbucks, Inara has other ideas, wanting to develop the estate into a luxury, specialty hotel. While on the island, she discovers a loosened stair tread. Curious, she moves it away and discovers a small package wrapped in fabric. She opens the package and discovers a silk sleeve with remarkable embroiders. She researches this unusual finding online and discovers a professor at a nearby university who specializes in such things. She seeks him out and, as easily as that, the story blooms into a full and fulfilling book.This book did what few can, it made me cry, deep, bone-shaking sobs, and made me miss my parents more that I can say.If you want to read an excellent novel, filled with true emotion and history that may well be repeating itself, this is the one.

Interesting but disturbing info about the mistreatment of Chinese in early Seattle, however, the story in the novel was only fair. The writing was uninspiring and the ending predictable. I finished the book because it was for my book club but I skimmed over entire paragraphs to get to the ending.The author based her story on her findings of the murder of several Chinese during the forcible removal of Chinese from the west coast. She extrapolated this into the murder of an entire boat-load.of Chinese. I thought that might be a stretch. However, the treatment of the Chinese girl, Mei Lein, who was left behind rang tragically true and I am reminded that our history includes some deplorable events.I don't regret reading the book but would hardly call it "brilliant" as the did the Amazon review.

On one hand this book was a page turner and a quick and easy read. On the other hand it was predictable and often far fetched. I found it unbelievable that a whole life could be depicted in embroidery, even with face recognition, etc. Mei Lin's struggle with her illness toward the end also was not believable. In the present time, I also had trouble with the whole renovation project, how quickly it came about without detailed planning, etc. There were also too many far fetched coincidences. Overall, it's a good, entertaining book to read.

I read alot I started this book and I couldn't put it down. I spent my whole life here in Seattle area I grew up on Beacon Hill my father worked in resurants in and around Pioneer square. My family has ties to Chinatown it was an amazing story. The characters jumped off the pages like you were in story. This is the kind of story you wait until a great storm is coming then you snuggle down in your recliner with a throw and hot cup of tea and read until you finish you wont be able to put it down.
