Professional Kindle Publishing With Jutoh: Beyond Word: a guide to importing, editing and creating ebooks professionally for KindleI needed something to help me format ebooks. I looked around and Jutoh was highly recommended and reasonably priced so I decided to give it a try.I was intimidated at first by the learning curve but the sample book / tutorial was very good and got me started. But as I worked I found I still had problems. Mostly related to graphics and getting the table of contents exactly how I wanted.I had two projects. One for a good friend was a normal flowable text book with a few tables (Looking Past the Next Paycheck by Robert Robinson) and the other for my brother was a child's picture book (Friends of the Greenman by Clyde Daugherty). The picture book was more challenging but with the information in "Professional Kindle Publishing With Jutoh: Beyond Word: a guide to importing, editing and creating ebooks professionally for Kindle" by Julian Smart I was able to get both projects done and published on Amazon.Now I've even used Jutoh to output the text book into an odt file then use LibreOffice to turn that into a pdf and publish the book on Amazon as a print on demand paperback. I am currently working on the print edition of the picture book.If you are serious about getting an ebook formatted and published I highly recommend using Jutoh and getting this book to get the most out of the program.
I self publish and used paid services for my last series. They turned out crappy at great expense. Now I have Jutoh which is easy-peasy and some formatting templates and I'm doing my own, under my own imprint. Take that overpriced self-pub vultures!
Thorough guide to using Jutoh to create ebooks.
Obviously, I like Jutoh itself...I wouldn't necessarily recommend this book as a first introduction to it. For that, just download the software and try the "Quick Start" from the Help menu. But the book is excellent, informative, and extremely useful.There's always a learning curve, and the world keeps changing. I mean, I loved using Writer's Cafe (also by Anthemion software). It was so much nicer than Scrivener, especially for outlining. But with the mobile world, I started doing my edits in plain-text files using Markdown for formatting. Scrivener would sync those text files to a folder I stored in Dropbox, so I could edit on my phone (meaning an Android device--Scrivener also has a version for iOS). Writer's Cafe wouldn't. So I switched...but I wasn't happy to let go of an old favorite.But now a new question has started to arise, with Scrivener 3 and its improved support for styles: should I keep using Jutoh at all? And I have to say the answer is an unqualified YES!!! Jutoh is simply better at everything ebook-related than Scrivener. There are more options, and frankly I think the program makes more sense. This book helped me to make that decision.Sadly, for POD books, I still have to import everything into Adobe InDesign to get the formatting exactly the way I want it. Speaking of learning curves...but moving my work from Jutoh to InDesign is simple, and for fiction at least there's not much left to do afterward.Anyway. I do my writing mostly in text files. I use various tools to edit them (JotterPad, Typora), but Scrivener is the glue holding things together. Once I'm ready to publish, though, I compile to HTML and move everything to Jutoh. Any further edits (front or back matter changes mostly) happen in Jutoh, which actually has a good enough editor that I might just write everything in it to begin with if I didn't want that mobile flexibility.A very good book, by a very smart guy, who has been creating quality software for writers for a decade that I know of.
