This is a beautifully done book that give a synopsis of each chapter in psalms without being an overwhelming amount of information.

Love the book. I am using it to help teach one of my Sunday Schoolclasses.

Psalms one of my most favorite books of the bible

Brownback’s SING A NEW SONG is a study of the Psalms of the Bible. The author takes about two pages for each of the one hundred fifty psalms, using simple musical terminology to discuss each psalm – Theme (the main idea of the psalm), Harmony (similarity to other Biblical texts), Singing in Tune (an analysis of the psalm), Musical Notes (God’s grace and attributes as shown in each Psalm), and Sing the Song (cross references to other Biblical texts, usually New Testament). Back matter consists of three appendices and an annotated bibliography for further study.This work impresses me as an excellent way to study the Psalms and how they correlate with the rest of the Bible. It’s in terms that laypeople can understand; the study for each Psalm is very well-organized; the bibliography’s annotations are brief but very clear.Brownback does not include the texts of the Psalms in her work. That may be to a great advantage, so that those reading her book can read these texts in the version of the Bible that they prefer.The one warning I have: When studying something as lengthy as the Psalms, readers had better prepare for a long study unless they want to dig in and study several Psalms at one sitting. Do not consider that a reflection against Brownback, but instead praise for taking on writing such a work as this.SING A NEW SONG is geared toward women’s Bible study groups. I cannot speak for how men might like this work, but, short of the subtitle (A WOMAN’S GUIDE TO THE PSALMS), I see little that’s distinctively for women.

Sing a New Song: A Woman's Guide to the Psalms is a good devotional dedicated to the study of Psalms. Each entry is focused on a single Psalm and includes:1. Theme: A single sentence that gives the overall theme of the particular Psalm.2. Harmony: A few sentences on the background behind the Psalm, such as whether it's a praise or a lament and a short bit on why it written as such.3. Singing in Tune: Background info regarding the particular Psalm, as well as simple verse by verse breakdown of the Psalm.4. Musical Notes: A revelation on who God is through the Psalm, as well as a list of God's attributes in relation to the Psalm.5. Sing the Song: Application to our own lives in relation to the Psalm, as well as references to scripture in relation to the Psalm.This book is not designed to be an indepth historical study of each passage, but instead a good summary of each Psalm in a digestable format. I enjoyed how easy the book was to follow and how it helped reveal God behind each of the Psalm's underlying themes. I also liked how this book is formatted so that it's a supplement to the actual bible instead of a replacement for it. Too often I've read devotionals that include a single verse as well as a summary which don't necessarily point you back to actually reading the scripture. While devotionals like that do serve their purpose, it's often easy to fall into the trap of reading only the devotional instead of the Bible as a whole.Overall, I enjoyed using this book as a supplement to reading through Psalms day by day. This would be a great book to use in a study of Psalms both in a group as well as individually.
