The DBC always makes such thoughtful choices so I look forward to their picks. I had tears in my eyes throughout reading this entire story. It was sad, heartwarming, and thought-provoking in a way that would be accessible to children.I adored Emily, the mother. Just loved her and really the whole family, too. The family wasn't perfect but it was still amazing. I thought the family dynamics were so well done and I hope to read more by Caela Carter soon.
I cannot recommend this book enough. As a therapist working with children and families of trauma this book beautifully illustrated and articulated many of the behaviors that are both functional and frustrating for foster/adoptive families I have the honor of knowing. This is a must read for anyone considering foster/adoptive parenting and child welfare/healthcare professionals alike.
Such a great book. It has great lessons and helps to teach empathy with readers. It is a quick and easy read for adults, my fifth graders are reading it currently and also really like the it. The author does a good job at giving you information but still allowing your mind to make assumptions and visualize and predict things that are happening.
Just finished this touching story! My heart was wrapped around Flora & Julian, former foster care children now adopted yet struggling with the trauma of their experiences! They are truly loved, but can they trust their forever mom & dad? Such a well written story!
This book should be required reading for foster and adoptive parents (not just from foster care). Such a beautiful book about our need to know our history.
This book was absolutely wonderful - moving and heartbreaking and hopeful all at the same time.
Beautifully written. Captures the voice of an 11 year old perfectly. I didn't want the story to end. Nice work!
As a mother this was a very tough read. It is devastating As an educator, so important. Really has opened my eyes!
