Readers will appreciate Penman’s mantra of understanding what you know and separating it from speculation. Really a great add-on to anyone following the value driven school as expounded by Graham, Dodd and Klarman.Presentation of concepts with a historical and case-study like approach using SBUX, GE and CSCO make what is an often seemingly complex matter into a simpler and more granular understanding of where investors unearth value.
This is arguably one of the most important modern books on investing. From student to practitioner, this book is a must. Stop reading this review and start reading Accounting for Value.
The novel writing of the textbook makes me really enjoy reading the book while learning the knowledge with the least efforts. The book covers the investment strategies with insightful fundamental analysis. Recommend the book to anyone who is interested to fundamental analysis and security investment. Wishing you enjoy the book as I do.
This seems to be a book written by someone with a strong academic pedigree who has read Benjamin Graham's books but has no experience investing. The book was well-thought out but very theoretical. I do not see how the concepts can be applied in practice. I found the book to be somewhat interesting but not useful.
Some good points about earnings and balance sheets, I just wish the author did not throw the cash-flow statements down the drain, they are a very useful piece of information. Companies issue these statements, why not analyse them as well?
This is an interesting complement to Valuation: Measuring and Managing the Value of Companies, 5th Edition (Wiley Finance), which presents a finance perspective on valuation (read cash flow). The current book presents an accounting perspective on valuation. The writing style is not totally clear and I've seen some articles in Financial Analysts Journal by the same author that are more clearly written. Still this book will give you a lot of interesting ideas if you are professional engaged in valuation of mostly listed companies. The author also has a textbook treatment which is worth a look
Excellent companion to the Professor Penman's textbook. Biggest lesson: clearly define and separate the known from the assumed, and anchor on the former. This book will make you a more conservative analyst/investor.
Interesting and not too technical, common sense accounting principles in order to invest sensibly using financial statements and annual reports.
