Review

“Elegantly written intellectual history . . . fascinating.” - Deborah Blum, New York Times Book Review“An engaging and richly detailed work of interdisciplinary history.” - Jonathan Lopez, Wall Street Journal“Beautifully evokes the ambience of late-seventeenth-century Delft . . . revelatory about Vermeer’s aims and methods, helping to explain what is so mesmeric about his work.” - Philip Ball, Nature“[Snyder] paints this vibrant world with verve, adding a wealth of details―as if following the slow and conscientious working methods of her protagonists....[giving] us as readers a lively sense of this exciting period and a thorough insight into the wider implications of these technological developments.” - Hanneke Grootenboer, History Today“Irresistible. . . . [Snyder] ingeniously explores the minutiae of her subjects’ lives to reveal sweeping changes in how their world was understood―ones that still resonate today.” - Jonathon Keats, New Scientist“Laura Snyder is both a masterly scholar and a powerful storyteller. In Eye of the Beholder, she transports us to the wonder-age of seventeenth-century Holland, as new discoveries in optics were shaping the two great geniuses of Delft―Vermeer and van Leeuwenhoek―and changing the course of art and science forever. A fabulous book.” - Oliver Sacks“A thoughtful elaboration of the modern notion of seeing. Laura J. Snyder delves into the seventeenth century fascination with the tools of art and science, and shows how they came together to help us make sense of what is right in front of our eyes.” - Russell Shorto, author of Amsterdam: A History of the World's Most Liberal City“As in The Philosophical Breakfast Club, Laura Snyder tells the tale of a crucial moment in human discovery by focusing on the interplay between the personalities involved, in this case the great Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer and the amateur scientist Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, best known for his miniature microscopes and his pioneering work as a microbiologist. This was an age when artists as well as scientists explored nature, occasionally with the same technical means, such as optical devices. This delightful book is solidly researched but reads like a novel―and a good one at that!” - Walter Liedtke, Curator of European Paintings, The Metropolitan Museum of Art

For those of us living in the 21st century it is hard to imagine the early links that connected art and science. This excellent account, tells how optical aids were used by tradesmen (rug dealers to counted knots in a rugs weave), artists (projection lenses to achieve better perspective), and scientists (microscopes and telescopes to aid human vision). These men all lived at the same time in Amsterdam and certainly interacted. Laura Snyder serves as a guide through these 17th century worlds. She shows how Vermeer adapted the camera obscura to project and frame images for some of his best known masterpieces. She also tells the story of his neighbor van Leeuwenhoeck who developed a primitive microscope to view the previously unknown microscopic world of bacteria, amoeba and even sperm. The Netherlands during the time these men lived enjoyed world wide domination over trade and commerce. For residents of Amsterdam it was a period of peace and prosperity. The result was a flowering of arts and sciences. The author does an excellent job of tying together the worlds of commerce, politics, art and science. This book will be of interest to any one interested in either art history or science history. It is neither too trivial for experts in these fields or too complicated for the novice.

"Dum audes, ardua vinces" "When you dare, you will conquer the steep" is what Laura Snyder shares how these two great men, Artist and Scientist thirst for knowledge and in doing so conquer the steep in the minutia. No less than the author has in researching the finest details and successfully articulating them to enable the reader to see for themselves and behold a new way of viewing their findings in a new light. As a novice I entered and as I exited I became more passionate and learned how these two great minds approach their subjects. Art and Science are interwined as she weaves an extremely well researched piece where the Art of Science and The Science of Art are one.

In conjunction with the DVD, "Tim"s Vermeer", this excellent book is accessible and informative. Actually it's better than the fine DVD.

This is an amazing book. The research must have taken years.

Great informative documentary!

well researched and written. Good accounts of Vermeer and Leevenhoek!

Laura Snyder writes with a grace and clarity that bring scientific issues to life. I felt as if I were right there with Vermeer and van Leeuwenhoek, walking the streets of Delft beside them.

Excellent book, a real treat for those interested in Dutch history of the 17th century!
