Ok, there isn't much pleasant news here - and I have no idea what to make of the final story that takes on a different manner of writing and seems to be about a different village. But Oz is still the master storyteller, even though many of the short stories don't have conventional plots or conventional endings.Open your mind to seeing what he's up to, and you'll meet interesting characters in interesting situations that can't help but mirror Israeli politics though that was probably not their purpose.

I ordered this book for a dear friend who had not yet read anything by Amos Oz... whereas I have read most of his books, and 'Scenes from Village Life' had been among my favourite ones by him. Enchanting short stories woven into one, a fair amount of melancholy penetrating all of it, well told, characters drawn in the style of Dostojevski or Tolstoi, just wonderful. Though we all know about the dilemma of Palestine/Israel and though one may tend to think of Israel as expansionist, you'll find yourself longing for Eastern Europe and wanting to go to Israel once you have read Amos Oz.

I love learning about the lives of people in small places, people who live lives so different from my own. Not so much exotic as circumscribed, following traditions that stretch back into history. Precise, revealing, engaging.

These stories, even when most enigmatic, are tantalizing reminders that modern Israel didn't really begin post-Holocaust as its detractors often contend, but has an older and richer pioneer background of farming and ranching. And despite the specificity of details making it pure Israeli, the human villagers could be villagers anywhere, even with their desirable natural setting dooming them to inevitable change. Skip the ending, however. It's discordant and off the subject just about entirely, making one wonder why it was included.

I found the stories beautifully crafted and evocative of a period in Israeli life that is treasured by many. The characters were multidimensional and were very powerful, whether it was the arab student at whom the elderly Israeli man Israeli vents his suspicion, the cantankerous elderly man with his political disappointments and anger, the aunt waiting for her nephew who did not arrive and her anguish and heartbreak. The group singing patriotic songs together in the home of a villager filled my ears with their music, and most of all their love of the land and hopes for its future. Amos Oz is a masterful story teller and paints a picture of an Israeli village that hangs in my mind in pride of place

Good book, good seller.

I assume this was a realistic look at life in a village like this and there were ties between/among the scenes. However, it left me very uncertain about the outcomes for the main "character" of each scene. Each was in a sad situation and I was left to draw my own conclusions as to how these played out. In most cases I assumed the worst. Definitely not recreational, feel-good reading.

These interlocking stories are set in a small town in Israel. I found them quite touching, and some very poignant. While the emotions the characters exhibit are universal, the setting in Israel gives them a particular flavor.
