The Story begins very much like the first book The Novice in how our protagonist stumbles upon his new ability. It does a good job in expanding upon some of the backstory throughout the trilogy. Given its stand-alone nature the story is pretty solid in the beginning and most of the end. There is a part concerning a baby, not Fletcher, that the author in attempting to tie in way too much makes the story a bit ridiculous and completely pulled me out of it. Once through this section though the story became entertaining once more.Overall the series is good and will likely be enjoyable through a couple reads. A reader should know though that if you only buy the first book or the second book you're going to get two books with Cliffhangers that are rather annoying and only there to make you buy the next book. In my opinion this could have been a prequel to a 2 book series. The first book could have ended differently completing the plot arc while not having a completely smack in the face ending. The second two books of the trilogy are pretty much one solid story split at the perfect point for another smack in the face Cliffhanger ending.As good as the writing is there is also a bit too much perfection in the circumstances of our protagonist. There's just way too much happenstance that ties in events characters and solutions. It makes the reader aware of the author's presence.

This is the real beginning of the The Summoner series. I loved going back and reading how it all it began...and it starts with Arcturus who inadvertently summons a demon. Sound familiar? Well, this is the secret that the king and his court have been trying to keep secret...the secret that actually exploded with Fletcher in the Inquisition. No spoilers here. However, I do recommend that the you read the Summoner series first and then The Outcast.What I loved the most about Outcast was learning more about Arcturus... learning his history, discovering his strengths and weakness, the doubts, questions, his sense of survival and the mind battles he had within himself. Yes, we get to meet some of the “future old characters” in the series. We meet a very young Elaine Lovett, Othello’s father and other dwarves and Fletcher’s real parents.What more is there to say? The world was already built, the “new” old characters developed on their own and the story telling is fast paced and unfolds almost effortlessly with each turning page. All I had to do was sit back and enjoy the adventure...and I did.

Set a generation before the events of the original Summoner trilogy, by the same author Taran Matharu, this volume chronicles the challenges that face a commoner who is gifted with talent, insight and deep loyalty. Themes of classism, racism and despotism, which are strong enough in the trilogy, come under a more acute analysis here. I believe this book can launch much needed discussions among young readers on those topics and on the topic of friendship, generosity and self-sacrifice for the common good.

The pace is always lightening quick in this series and this book is no exception. The character development and plot move at an even pace and provide only the occasional misdirection to keep things flowing yet interesting. The characters and chapters move from one dramatic situation to the next in a way that never provides a good stopping point and requires the reader to continue on never putting the book down. The authors dependence on deus ex machina can sometimes become weary, but the quick pacing doesn't let the reader focus on any particular irritation. I am hoping there is more coming from the author in the form of prequels or sequels. Lastly, if you are a fan of cover art, the dusk jacket is artistic enough to make you want to frame it. Review I love this series...and the prequel was no exception. It was a real treat to go back and read Arcturus’s story. It was enlightening as well as informative. This exciting tale explained many of the relationships between Arcturus and the other characters. It filled my need for another book...although I would love more!

Just as good as the Summoner Trilogy, which is awesome! Wish there was more!

This explains a lot of things that I didn't understand from reading the Summoner Trilogy. Things make more sense now. I understand what started the events and why certain characters did what they did. If you haven't read it, please do so. You won't be sorry.

A great book just like the other 3 books all I can hope is more to come. The keeps you on edge wondering what will happens next, you keep me reading your book and I can put it down thanks.

As a Charismatic who could never embrace cessationism and yet at times has found himself quite frustrated with some of the teachings and the fluffy foolishness within the Charismatic world, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was VERY refreshing to read!Dr. Storms has a high regard for the scriptures and for Christian orthodoxy yet he has also seen the reality that God has not ceased doing miracles.I especially appreciated how Dr. Storms compared the two camps and brought out the common tendencies and beliefs / views each group often embraces and how those views can stifle their own spiritual maturity. His insights brought much more clarity to the topic and helped me understand my cessationist brothers and sisters more deeply. Now when I hear them ranting or even ridiculing and mocking my fellow Charismatics it doesn't sting quite as much as it used to. And I see where they're coming from. I also respect that they place a high value on the scriptures and the gospel. And Dr. Storms helped me see why they tend to embrace a post-Biblical and dare I say it, an unbiblical doctrine of cessationism.Like a skilled theologian, and even pastoral counselor, Dr. Storms challenged both groups to try to see the good in the other as well as to examine where some of their own beliefs may not line up with the scriptures like they assume. He encouraged all believers to value both the Word and the Spirit, the mind and the heart, the traditions and the gifts.And I especially enjoyed the section on affections and how passionately expressing our admiration for God in worship is a good thing and not the carnal "emotionalism" so many accuse Charismatics and Pentecostals of engaging in.This is a book I wish every Christian would read. Even the ones who never leave cessationism or accept that tongues and prophecy are legitimate gifts in the church today. If nothing else, it will bring understanding to this divide in the church.

Carson's book "Showing the Spirit: A Theological Exposition of 1 Corinthians 12-14" started to re-evaluate his cessationism.The book is great in its candid and honest description of both sides of the issue - Charismatic/continuationationist and Calvinist/cessacionist; Sam Storms being himself on both camps, teaching and ministering among both.Very Good!

There is so much tension, disagreement, and even disputes among many Christians in regards to the truth about the Word of God, and the power of the Holy Spirit, and how they interact with each other.On one side, we have the cessationists that believe the gifts of the Spirit have ceased and are no longer active in the church today. On the other side, we have the charismatics, who believe the gifts of the Spirit are still active and should be a regular part of the ministry. There is a separation of Word and Spirit in our lives and in the church.These differences have been some of main reasons the church has been divided for a long time now. So much ridicule and mocking against each other, has been the main reason of no unity between these two different camps. Is there any hope of reconciling the two together? Can there be any balance? Can the church manage to put aside the differences within its own members and focus perhaps on something more valuable and important: helping the poor, caring for the needy, and most importantly--mission? Is there any chance these two sides can come into a convergence?Sam Storms writes in a way that analyzes each camp's differences, weaknesses, and strengths. Sam Storms calls all believers to a reconciliation of Word and Spirit, mind and affection, principle and passion in both the individual and the church as a whole. Our lives cannot function properly if we lean too much on one side, either side of scripture or the Spirit. Our goal should be to seek, pray, and let the Holy Spirit work in our lives life to produce the humility and balance that will ultimate lead to a better relationship with God.Sam's life is very inspiring, motivating, and encouraging. His prayer is that we may be more sensitive to work and the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives to seek the heart of God for reconciliation of Word and Spirit.

I grew up with a reformed theology background (Reformed Baptist); however, I was introduced to the Charismatic doctrine early on in my life. I have wrestled with questions my entire life with regards to the Holy Spirit and His work today. Even after receiving an M.Div. I continued to battle over things like intellect vs emotion, bizarre unexplainable dreams and attacks on my family, and the physical manifestations of demonic activity.I began to realize that I couldn’t intellectualize the spiritual realm to include the reality of God’s unyielding grace poured out by His Spirit on us. The more I pondered and saw the more realized the spiritual world is very real and I am not just “wrestling against flesh”; however, I struggled to find like minded people because it seemed as though there could be no middle ground. Then I discovered this book by Dr. Sam Storms and it radically changed my perceptions in a very positive way.If you are struggling the way I did then please take the time to read this book. It will radically change your perception of both Calvinism and the Charismata doctrines. You will not be sorry!

I'm not a prepper, but I believe in being prepared. I guess some would say that makes me a prepper. Whatever you call it, it's always important to be prepared, especially in the way the world has become such a more dangerous place to live. When you live in a rural area, it has it's own problems. Throw in the fact that power outages and storms are a regular occurrence no matter when you live.The book is a quick read. I read it in all of three nights, a bit at a time. Though, I didn't really learn much new from it, I did learn a few things that will be of use in assisting me with being prepared.Overall, if you wish to prepare for the inevitable, I highly suggest giving this a read and taking heed of the advice in it.

I bought this book at the beginning of the summer, but just got around to reading it this week. I am a licensed professional civil engineer in Florida and my specialty of 33 years is water resources. I am also a veteran who served 4 years in the 82nd Airborne Division in an infantry line company. I know the importance of water and I have 4 years of first hand experience serving in areas where potable water is a commodity. If I had only this book to guide me during that time, I would have died within a week, maybe less. I was going to write a detailed review, but I decided I can't possibly say it any better than "Amazon Customer" did on June 9, 2016:"It is a 200 page book. I got to page 73 (the beginning of Chapter 6) and it was all stories about events where water became scarce and how society broke down. That is more than 1/3 of the book on useless nonsense I can do nothing about, like water-borne diseases. Then the book goes on to advise that's common-sense, like fill the tub and every container you got.The other 2/3 of the book reads like housewife advice--like how to wash your hands 101 and how to shop smart. My favorite is how to upgrade your shower head. If you are a prepper this book is not for you. Spend your money elsewhere."Well said, "Amazon Customer". I only hope other serious preppers are listening.

The book advised to install a well if possible to get water in a survival situation. I have a well. The book failed to tell me how to get the water out of the well when I no longer have electricity. I had other questions that went unanswered as well. It was just the standard answers available everywhere. I expected more from a book with this title.

There's little in here that an experienced prepper wouldn't already know, but I still gleaned enough to feel comfortable recommending this book. Like the title says, clean water is the most important prep to have in most disasters and every step you take towards water preparedness will benefit you no matter how small.The most important thing to know before you buy this book is to realize that it is largely geared toward surviving short and medium-term situations where clean water is unavailable. Think hurricanes, local and regional water table contamination, and electric well pumps failing during a power outage. Someone looking for detailed instructions on how to get clean water during a long term grid down situation will likely be disappointed. The people who will get the most out of it are ones who know water is a weak spot in their preparedness plans but don't know what options are out there beyond bottled water and purification tablets. Still, water is such a vital prep that this is a book worth having on your shelf even if it's only to lend out to others.

This book outlines a lot of basics and highlights the need for you to be prepared for an emergency. The author also outlines many possible solutions and gives you great advice on how to get started making your plan. However, on perhaps the most crucial aspects the book does not go into too much detail. (A step by step guide is given for making an outhouse, but no guide is given for how to make a distillation system, UV light system, etc.) The individual methods of purification are listed, which is a great starting point, but little advice is given as to how to implement them.So I'll say this book is a great starting point, but ultimately does not contain all the information needed. You'll learn by reading it, but it is just shy of being a "one stop shop" for all your water - survival needs.

I was amazed at the number of ways to get and store water. I also did not realize how quickly one could become sick from lack of water. This book may be small in size, but it packs a tremendous amount of information. I did not know of all the ways to obtain water, and how much water a single person needs to survive. I live in an area of this country that get a lot of rainfall. But I did not realize how much water just runs off. This book will be invaluable in a crisis situation, it could save a persons life. I highly recommend this book. JRV

I fell in love with viewing stars and planets 50+ years ago but grew frustrated with the problems: halos around stars, fuzzy views of planets, difficulty tracking objects in the night sky. And collimating the 'scope! Too much. So I searched for a good book to help me and this is the one that really fit the bill.Harrington knows his stuff. He explains it very, very well, and the book is organized in a manner that allowed me to grasp the points of telescopes, binoculars, eyepieces, and mounts. I let me to understand why focal length, power, eye relief, etc. are important and yet do not need to put me off. There are tables to help me quickly look at what matters to help my viewing experience. And he not only dealt with particular brands, using both frank discussions of products, clarifying types of telescopes and binoculars and other equipment, combined with his personal viewing experiences and reviews for a major astronomic viewing magazine. Perfect.I can now see the reasons for my difficulties and the solutions. I had been using a Bausch & Lomb 10X35 binoculars for looking in the sky at night, and it was frustrating. I spent only a hundred bucks more for a pair of Pentax binoculars that are wonderful, and I see so much more! I will also be able to get better use out of my two reflector telescops now that I understand the equipment better, and there are a couple of reasonably priced accessories I'll get, such as a better finder-scope.I didn't want something that would make it all more difficult for me, and this book gave the breadth of information and level of analysis I needed. Perfect!

I basically bought this book to get current on the latest gear, it fills the bill in every way as far as that goes with tons of pertinent and useful data to help a person decide where to go with their interest. I had a very high end telescope a few years ago, but it wasn't very portable, and very few people were willing to go through the ordeal of getting to dark and then setting up and observing quite far from home base! Recently I aquired a fixer upper Newtonian and wanted to fit it out a little better than usual for more casual and portable viewing. This book was perfect for exactly what I needed. It re-introduced me to the good, better and best gear, and made me realize that even a smaller, well set up scope could get the job done very well. I highly recommend the book to anyone starting out or re-entering the hobby after a hiatus. Solid, usefull and current info as long as you get the latest edition!!

Oh yeah. This book saved me from an expensive purchase I would not have been happy with.Learned enough to make a good decision on purchasing a (actually two) telescopes(s).I was very confused getting back into astronomy and looking at all the choices and reviews. Previous telescopes were department store types and after reading this book, it was not surprising I gave up the hobby for 30 years!I recommend this book prior to making ANY telescope purchase by the beginning astronomer.

Excellent book! This is the second book I am reading before making a telescope purchase. There is much more a telescope than I thought there was and this book goes into the necessary detail I need to understand before I make the correct purchase. I would recommend this book as the second book to read before making a purchase if you are a novice like me.

As a newcomer to astronomy, I have read 'Nightwatch', 'Turn Left at Orion', and this book. 'Nightwatch' provides some good advice on buying your first telescope. 'Star Ware', however, is a much more comprehensive guide to telescopes and telescope accessories. Take the time to read it and you will be rewarded with a wealth of information that will enable you to make informed decisions on what telescope is right for you and what else you will need to buy. My only criticism is that in an attempt to be comprehensive it provides almost too much information - a dizzying array of manufacturers for one thing. Also, I have the Kindle edition and I think for reference books like this I'd rather have the print version. But that's just me. Anyway, good telescopes aren't cheap and this book will help you make a good choice. Well worth the money.

This book is very easy to read, and extremely helpful if you are in the market for a telescope. The types of instruments available, and which ones are good for viewing which objects are all easily explained. Which eye pieces? Which mounts? Which manufacturers? The author doesn't dumb down the subject but presents the important specifications for intelligent buying in a manner that all can understand. Ultimately, he leaves that to you, but it really did make me a better consumer. I'm glad I spent a few bucks for the book not only for the well presented info but also because it was an interesting read. Thanks Mr. Harrington.

There are a number of books out there that cover available equipment for Amateur Astronomy. However, I haven't found any that cover this area as in depth as this book. The Author, Phil Harrington has certainly done his research, and brings this information to the reader in an easily understood way. When I am looking to purchase a new piece of equipment, Starware is the first book I grab for the information I need.

About the Author

MIKE CHAPPELL has covered the Colts since their relocation to Indianapolis in 1984. He covered the Colts from 1999 through 2013 and through most of those years wrote the cover story for the Star’s Colts Weekend sections. He is a member of the Indiana Sportswriters and Sportscasters Hall of Fame.
